1860

I went there on a Tuesday evening and it was nearly empty.
Service was OK and the waiter helped choosing, recommending that the "bunnies" would be enough.
True enough it was but I ordered mine "hot" as I normally eat Madras or a little hotter. It was far too hot and unlike Phal or Vindaloo just hot. There was not enough other flavour present through the chilli. The meat (chicken) was watery and tasteless too.
Much as I'd want to I can't recommend 1860.

1860 is superb. I've eaten there many times now & the quality of the quisine is second to none on every occassion. The menu is fascinating, with an extensive vegetarian selection & some truly wonderful starters... but the main course Chicken n Methi is quite simply the finest Asian dish I've had in 20 years living in the UK. A simple delicious Roti & the most incredibly fragrant steamed rice you can imagine make the perfect accompaniment.
The staff are courteous & friendly at all times, but it saddens me sometimes that the place isnt busier. There are many much more popular places for a curry in South Croydon but none of them come close to the quality & orgininality of 1860.
I cannot recomend this place strongly enough!

1860 is an absolute delight
We eat here regularly and always several members of the party will have a Mutton Bunny Chow, for the uninitiated this is a Traditional Durban Curry served hot as hades, mild as butter or anywhere in between according to your personal preferences. The meal is served inside half a loaf of bread with the scooped out insides served alogside to help mop up the juices. The owner has the bread baked locally to his own recipe to provide the most authentic Durban flavour.
The staff are nearly all family members and on the quieter week days they will always make the time to chat with you.
My only minor critisism is the price of the excellent South African sourced drinks menu. They are not horrendous though and the Robertsons Red wine is amazing.
Take the time to visit this fantastic restaurant you will not forget it

This place is a gem and one that you should visit for excellent fresh food. The fish was fantastic and the owner is very welcoming. My vote for the best restaurant in the South Croydon Strip. Go and enjoy!

This is the ONLY place in the UK serving authentic Durban cuisine. Absolutely worth the trek into Croydon. I had the Kalahari lamb ribs to start and I still think about them.
Forget what you think you know about curry - you'll never say the words vindaloo or madras again
Excellent value for money and great service. My only regret is that it isn't closer to London.

I've had madrases and vindaloos and jalfrezis et al in a hundred and one different curry houses, and they always taste the same; some good, some bad, some indifferent, but the basic character is the same. At 1860, though, what you get is something original; a wide range of authentic curries made with home-prepared spices, and offered as fierce or as mild as you want. It oozes quality, like it's been made by people who are cooking it for themselves, and it's special for being so different. Really, this place is worth a trip to Croydon; a perfect combination of food and a warm, friendly welcome.

An EXCELLENT place to eat in Croydon. The owners are very friendly and hospitable and the food is divine! This place allows you to taste the real Durban spices in food rather than some heated up slop like many Indian restaurants.
Exceptionally clean and tidy ... with that "home" atmosphere. It's great for a romantic meal and a big party!
The Braai Chops are my favourite (starters) but all of the food is prepared to an exceptionally high standard and I recommend the Castle Beer or Robertson's Red Wine to accompany!

For anyone looking for a 'proper' South African Indian meal - this is the place to go to. Friendly family service is a bonus. This is the ONLY place in London to get a 1/4 mutton bunny, with the carrot pickle of course !!! I highly recommend 1860.
