The Hill

We went to The Hill last Saturday after a visit to the cinema and wished we hadn't bothered! Although the restaurant had confirmed our online booking by text, when we arrived there, no-one seemed to know who we were. After hanging about for 10 minutes, we were finally shown to our table. We ordered drinks which took another 10 minutes to arrive (our waitress had forgotten about us!) but they came accompanied by warm garlic bread and rather nice chilli oil so things seemed to be looking up.
I ordered the Pimavera pizza which was described on the menu as "tomato, mozzarella, rocket & parma ham". What it should have said was "rocket, rocket, more rocket with a few bits of ham chucked on top". It looked as if someone had opened a bag of salad and tipped the whole lot over my pizza. The base was dry and sadly lacking in mozzarella. The parma ham was nice though. My husband opted for the monkfish with mustard mash which he said was truly horrible. The mash was unforgivably lumpy and the fish tough.
We decided to skip dessert and ordered coffee. My Americano came with no milk and it took us a while to grab the attention of a waitress to request some. This was plonked on the table in a dirty jug!
Needless to say, we won't be going back!

We went to The Hill for Sunday lunch having read rave reviews in local rags. We sat outside in their lovely patio garden and the service was excellent. The food however did not quite meet the standards we had expected. Our biggest gripe was the bread. A restaurant charging these sort of prices has no excuse for poor bread. We expected high quality, if not homemade, but disappointingly we were given something you would buy straight off the shelf at a cheap supermarket (I imagine) i.e. thin, flimsy and tasteless. The meal was slightly redeemed by the seafood salad I started with, delicious, and my husband had the avocado gratin, equally delicious. I then had the coq au vin, beautifully presented and very tasty, but far, far too big a portion for me; almost an entire bird! He had their signature sea bass ravioli, heavily recommended in the reviews but unfortunately possibly the blandest ravioli ever. We never have to add salt when eating out but in this instance we had to, and it still didn't make much difference. A real shame. If we do go back we'll go for dinner and try their steak, as I believe The Hill has been set up by the Buenos Aires Blackheath chap, where the meat is excellent. Maybe they should stick to what they know?

Hadn't been for over 18 months and, in its previous incarnation, had thought it over-rated. Also hadn't been too keen on its new menu - who needs more pizza?! - but was persuaded to spend a chunk of a summer afternoon in the garden.
Food was great and with Sunday specials in almost ludicrously big portions. The seabass in a tempura-like batter served on rocket and peanut butter (!) was fabulous. (I'm grateful to the waiter who pointed out that a side with my seabass was really unnecessary.) Wines were good and reasonably priced, the Adnams well kept and the service attentive and knowledgable without being in-your-face. Got to say I thought it great and the garden lovely.
And I may even go back to try their pizzas which looked really rather good...

Family lunch on Sunday. Started well and rapidly went down hill. Wine list now v boring, no English wine since the take over.
A pizza had virtually no mozzarella and a ludicrous amount of rocket- most of which had to be taken off- then piled on the olive dish, they could do with a trip to Pizza Express to see how it should be done.
A fillet steak- great meat cooked medium rare, as ordered was covered in a quite revolting sauce- meant to be pepper sauce- looked and tasted like gravy with peppercorns. A trip to Gaucho might help them see how it should be done.
The wild boar ragu was well received.
The service was slow, the staff spoke little English- mustard was a concept that even the Irish waiter found almost impossible to grasp.
V disappointing visit, won't be going back.

The Hill in Greenwich has fantastic food and a great atmosphere. We went there for Christmas party and they were extremely hospitable. Would recommend for any occasion.

I went to The Hill for my work Christmas Party in 2010 and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The service and food were both excellent and a good time was had by all of my colleagues. There was a relaxed and jolly atmosphere and the staff were very friendly.
I will certainly be returning to The Hill with my friends in the near future.

My wife, myself and our 19 month old son went for lunch at the Hill on Tuesday 11th Jan. As other reviewers have said, it has very recently changed hands.
My wife ordered provoleta cheese and I had a pizza (primavera - with mozz. rocket and parma ham) and we had garlic bread and a salad.
We both thought the food was very good indeed. My pizza was excellent, and the provoleta was also extremely tasty. The garlic bread was light and obviously home made - probably the best I've had in recent memory. All ingredients were very fresh. The service was good as well, and we found all the staff there very friendly and laid back.
As for our son Sam, we took a pot of food for him which they kindly heated up for us, and although they don't yet have a children's menu the chef offered to cook us a small pot of fresh veggies, or anything we would like (next time we go we may leave the food pot at home and get something fresh made up for him).

We have been to the Hill many times before and always found it good, but I think the Hill has recently changed management and our recent visit was a disaster.
We booked a table of 8 for Sunday lunch on the 9th January. The waiters can hardly speak or understand any English at all which made ordering very difficult and when the food arrived, the plates were cold, the food just warm, the vegetables so over or under cooked and the meat very fatty and tough (clearly cheap cuts of meat were used). The gravy was almost non existent and tasted disgusting and the Yorkshire puddings were completely flat.
When we complained about the temperature of the food, the plates were taken away and simply heated in the microwave which we think is unacceptable.
We decided to order desserts as we were still hungry having left most of the main course, but that was an even bigger mistake, the cream tasted sour, the cake stale, even the tiramisu was horrible.
We would not return and would encourage others to think very carefully before booking this restaurant.

We decided to pop to the Hill on Sunday 02nd Jan 2011 for Sunday Lunch - Have been may times before and it is always excellent - However this time we had an awlful experience.
The roast was the worse I have ever had - Some of us got roasties, some did not. Some got yorkshire and some did not.... What ever they covered the lunch in - Gravy it was not!!!! The place was cold - We had a waiter that could hardly speak any english - And the manager was more interested in texting on his phone than customer service!!!
I think it has recently been taken over - And to be honest if they do not up the game I feel the place will be nore more - Sorry to say this is one place I loved, but will now avoid!!!
