Two friends and I visited this restaurant on Saturday. It was my fifth time visiting the restaurant. Up until now I had always had a fantastic time.
On this occasion we where sat in the garden that was fine apart from the service was slow and we kept being forgotten about.
The food wasn’t great. We had salmon and peppers to start followed by the lamb and fish ‘n’ chips.
When leaving we had an argument with two couples who where sat in the dreadful table by the toilets and next to the door leading to the garden. They complained rather aggressively about the door to the garden being opened and closed all evening. The waitress then took their side and started arguing with us. Which didn’t make for a pleasant evening.
I would not recommend this restaurant again. Which is a real shame.

I have eaten at The Hill a number of times and have found that the quality of the dishes vary. The menu changes regularly and this may be part of the problem as some dishes work whereas others don't. It is expensive, considering that dishes are similar to what you would find in gastropubs. On the positive side, the service is very good and the atmosphere is excellent.

Food very average and over priced. Think they believe they are a restaurant rather than a gastro pub. Will only be drinking there in future.

Run of the mill
Didn't think this still passed as acceptable within the M25

Having come across the river with a small child high chair booked etc we were quite looking forward to eating at this converted public house in Greenwich
Shared a starter of Chicken liver pate (out of tin) came with three small haves of supermarket bread not toasted no garnish
Mains one beef one lamb very bland no garlic or rosemary and quite mean
soft Yorkshire puddings veg was cooked well but no imagination, didn't stay for coffee and dessert wont be returning what a shame nice venue......

I am surprised this restaurant attracts such extreme ratings, both high and low. Based on the dinner we had there last night, it is very much middling.
My duck starter was confused and dry; a definite disappointment and the worst of what we ate. My pork chop main was slightly overcooked (& the mashed potato a touch too starchy) but overall undoubtedly a tasty, decent dish. My partner's fish cakes were definitely the best thing we ordered; good and nicely accompanied by the rest of the dish. Rather disconcertingly, the table next to us also ordered fish cakes, but theirs were cooked to a much lighter colour. We also had chips with our main; these were unevenly cooked ---- some well-done and a bit bland, others close to under-cooked and very strongly permeated by the rosemary. For dessert we shared cheesecake. This was enjoyable (I think it's impossible to make an unenjoyable cheesecake) but had a slightly odd texture and not quite enough of a base. Overall, then, the food is definitely passable whilst noticeably imperfect.
The atmosphere on our visit felt remarkably cozy for what is basically a big spacious converted pub. The service staff were efficient, helpful and polite. Overall, 'The Hill' seems handy as a local but not worth a special visit. Cost is £14 for two courses, £18 for three, which is quite reasonable.

My partner and i have been to The Hill at regular intervals for the last 18 months, ordinary days as well as Christmas Day, Valentines Day, Mothers and Fathers Day. We have not been dissapointed yet,
The staff are very helpful in every matter, the food excellent and the prices reasonable (we even thought they could get away with charging more!).
We believe it is the best restaurant in Greenwich ( and we have tried many others, even one run by the owners of "The Ivy") and we have found no better.
The consistancy of everything good about this restaurant is second to none.
PS:, We even sat next to Pete Waterman and his lady friend on one occassion!
I say no more.
Please try it.

Three of us went to The Hill for lunch on Sunday. We ordered one lamb Sunday roast and two fish and chips. On a previous visit the lamb roast had been delicious however on this occasion the meat must have come from 2 separate joints as some of it was well done and the remainder almost raw. The yorkshire puddings were burnt. The fish was well cooked with crispy batter but the accompanying potates were herby wedges rather than proper home made chips and these were a bit of a disappointment. I feared for my teeth fillings as they were very crispy! Having said all that the staff swiftly replaced the lamb dinner with another portion of fish and wedges and did not charge for one of our drinks. This was my second visit to The Hill, it wasn't successful as the first. I am going again with a group of friends in a few weeks time and just hope that The Hill will be back on par.

We visited the Hill last Sunday for lunch. We went towards the end of the sitting and once again we were not dissappointed.
It was a busy lunch time with quite a few large tables in there, and although that had run out of a few things (to be expected on a busy lunchtime) and we couldn't have the roast beef, we both chose roast lamb and it was wonderful. The staff were lovely as always.
Although we did not have the chips the couple on a nearby table did and they looked gorgeous and not soggy or swimming with fat.
I would ignore the negative reviews and go and make up your own mind, as each time I have eaten at the Hill it is been great, the bar staff and the waiting staff are always friendly and give a wonderful service.
We'll be back!

Went to The Hill for the first time on Friday night (4th April 2008). I had been looking forward to trying the food there for sometime after having a bowl of chips there about 1 week after it opened (best chips i had ever had). Was most disappointed. Food was really poor and overpriced. Would have been good if it was about £5 a meal however steak was £13. Was fatty, tasteless, thin and I really did need the steak knife to saw through it. Fish and Chips werent good either. Chips were wedges, rather than the lovely hand cut chips I had when it first opened, sprinkled with some kind of herb - awful. Fish was soggy and tasteless. We were sat in an awful table next to the toilets away from the main part of the restaurant so the ambiance couldnt even make up for it. Only plus point was the wine - very good!
