a very good place with a hip atmosphere - and A list celebrities - starter was alright but main and desert were fantastic - the music and club is the best london has had for a long time

I booked a table for four for dinner and left my telephone number. As requested, I called again a few days before the booking when availability for the night was double checked and my reservation was then reconfirmed. At no point was I warned that my booking would be cancelled should a member arrive on the night requesting a table. We arrived promptly for our booking but were the told that a member had been given my table. They did not offer to find me an alternative table at a different time or even offer us access to the bar. It was incredibly rude to be refused access at the door and I was furious. We had all arranged childcare for a special night out and were then treated shabbily. I have never experienced such poor customer service and I am amazed at their blase attitude and the fact that they did not even bother to contact me beforehand to warn me. Definitely somewhere to avoid and I would be amazed if they are still in business in a years time.

Not being a member, I booked a party for 10 at The Cuckoo Club, mainly on a couple of recommendations from friends. The process for booking was convoluted to say the least, although as a members club I expected this so was not too troubled. The problems started, however, on the night.

I arrived with my party and was told that we would not be allowed in due to an insufficient male-female ratio. This was something I had expressly cleared whilst bookings, and so did not appreciate the delay (and accusation that I couldn't have possibly mentioned this when booking - basically being told I was a liar) before we were finally allowed in. Although this delay wasn't our fault, we were then told we had to order food immediately, not having any time to sit down and relax or even properly read the menu. The rudeness again insinuating that every problem was our fault.

When it arrived, the food was excellent all round - sesame and miso cod was succulent, sea bass perfect and the steak very tender. The service, however, continued to amaze. White wine was poured into red, rose into white, and general rudeness and aloofness abounded the whole time.

When it came to the bill - dinner for 10 with one course each and drinks came to nigh on £700 - the waitress flew off her handle at the shock of processing 8 credit card transactions. She told me that I would have been expressly told that a maximum of 5 cards per table is allowed, which I was never told (again, essentially telling me I was lying) and that the process would take her 40 minutes and she was very busy with lots of other important guests so she wouldn't have the time.

As is my right, due to the service being pretty awful, I mentioned I did not want to pay the 'optional 12.5% service' that had been added to the bill. Again, the waitress showed no temerity, telling me I had to pay that until eventually storming off to get the manager. When he arrived, he was quite rational after I explained my reasoning. One comment that stuck, however, was 'That's quite OK, but I will say if you don't pay the service you will never be welcome back at The Cuckoo Club again'.

After this we put the whole fiasco behind us and had a very good night downstairs in the club.

The sad thing is that the venue is beautifully-decorated, music good (apart from a thirty minute sequence during dinner of David Bowie songs sung in various European languages) and the food excellent. Overpriced? Certainly, but you pay the premium. Would I go back - on the basis that I was accused of lying on numerous occasions and not felt welcome at any point of the evening, no.

terrible terrible terrible.

rude and this kind of place will never be a china white, tramps etc. Just obnoxious shop assistants on the door making u grateful when u get in. AVOID!
