Hamburger Union (Upper St)

Hamburger Union USED to be good... since the new ownership by Aberdeen Angus Steak House the quality has hit rock bottom.. Burgers are not freshly made as they used to be and they now serve a 2 layer thinner and processed type of burger tasting tough and very ordinary which reminds me of the very cheapest one can find anywhere else. The price too has increased and there is now an inferior product costing way above that it should be and offering very little value.. The staff are good and helpful and have expressed concern but have to now use the supplies sent.
I have sent emails to the 'customer services' expressing my dissatisfaction, but have had no reply .

VERY disappointing! Just had lunch here today and my bun & burger were both burnt! When I complained they reluctantly took it back and I had to wait for a replacement. There was no apology or any concern about the rotten service and food I received. AVOID!!!!

I am surprised at the bad reviews below- I have been to Hamburger Union at least three times now and have been impressed on all the occasions. The burgers are really good quality, the chips amazing, and it's all really good value for money. The staff were not incredible, but perfectly adequate. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good burger.

What a disappointment! I would NOT recommend Hamburger Union. Firstly, the price list is a little confusing and slightly misleading; a 'protein burger' comes without the bun, but between two wet iceberg lettuce leaves at the same price which doesn't seem right to me also, why advertise that the burger comes with ketchup, mustard and mayo when A, all condiments are on the menu and B. most people would prefer to add that kind of stuff themselves to their own taste.
Anyway...the chips at 2.25/portion were very lacklustre and very expensive for what was a small, slightly undercooked, dry handful, especially as I would pay 1.00 in a decent local chippy for juicy well cooked fresh potato chips. The steak sandwich was as tough as boot leather, in fact, so tough, I sent it back. To be fair, the manager took the steak back and proceeded to make me another burger without asking what I wanted. Why wouldn't you ask what I wanted as a replacement?
When I received the burger, it was very thin, didn't taste of the quality they advertise. It was almost exactly like a MacDonald's burger. My expectation was for a big, juicy burger at least a wide mouthful with excellent bun coverage. If everything is cooked on site, why not make it look homemade? As Hamburger Union ONLY sells hamburgers, they should be spectacular, this was a poor excuse for a Hamburger joint.

Went last night and found it very average. Chips were really good but the burger was nothing special. Too thin (I'd prefer a thicker burger that is less wide so you can taste the beef more and doesn't get so overcooked) - reminiscent of cheap pub burger rather than a freshly made patty. It would have tasted OK had it been thicker though. But paying £1 for one tiny slice of bacon? Rip off. Overall it was alright but wish I hadn't gone out of my way to go there.

After eating in the Fine Burger Company a great deal I felt the need to try a different burger bar for a change. What a mistake that was. The staff were rude, unhelpful and slow. My first indication of what was to come was that I waasn't asked how I wanted my burger cooked. Then again, that may be because it was as thick as an After Eight! Not to mention overcooked, rubbery and tasteless. Left very annoyed and vowed never to stray from Fine Burger again.

I was in Islington and popped into Hamburger union for a quick bite. I have to say that I had a really great meal. The beef tasted as good as it was marketed to be, you could taste the difference between chips you would be served in another restaurant and the fresh ones on offer at Hamburger union. We also had the caramalised onions, absolutely superb. I wouldn't normally leave a comment, but when browsing through the site i saw the negative comments i felt compelled as my experience was the complete opposite, great food, good staff. Definitley go back.

Hamburger Union Islington. Fantastic Juicy Burger and full of flavour. If you want a good quality hamburger that won't cost the earth, I suggest thier Monterey Jack Bacon Cheese, with a Healthy Portion of chips (Fresh not Frozen). For Two people £18.00.They were very busy, I had to wait for 5mins for a seat, worth it. Staff not English but not a problem.

This place is a scam. The manager doesn't even know any english !
I went to the recently opened angel branch and left very unhappy.I ordered a regular bacon cheese burger but was served a plain burnt charcoal like burger and to add to all my misery I asked to talk to the manager who came after 15 minutes and didn't even understand what I was telling her. They should probably consider employing people who can communicate a bit better with their customers.
This place is an overpriced mess.Bad service and bad food, not a good combination !
