Baan Thai

We visited Baan Thai when our regular Thai in East Dulwich was fully booked, after the positive reviews here. Maybe the restaurant has changed hands recently, or the owners are resting on their laurels, but we were very disappointed with our meal.

Our starters were clearly frozen, and one was not even properly cooked. For our main course, we chose a red thai curry which was bland and surprisingly mild, lacking any of the heat you would expect from that dish. Our other main course, a chef special musselman curry was equally disappointing - gelatinous, with a strange sweet and fruity taste. The sticky rice was almost inedible - so sticky that you needed a knife and fork to cut it.

All of this wouldn't have been so bad had the prices not been considerably more than we would normally pay for a simple Thai meal - the bill for two came to £37 including a beer each.

Avoid at all costs!

I had a few hours to kill in Brixton whilst the kids went to the Academy, so tried this place based on the previous reviews. I agree about the excellent food but also found the service friendly and quite quick on a packed Friday night. I will use it again next time the Academy beckons. The bizarre conversation between two witches at the next table was strange however.

Nice little Thai restaurant with great tasting food I hesitate to use the word "authentic" as I really don't know what that is! however the only comment about authenticity I'll make is that strangely they serve steamed basmati instead of Thai Jasmine rice.

Service-wise, they try hard, but don't visit on a busy Friday or Saturday night. It seems the small kitchen just can't cope with the volume of orders and the staff have difficulty keping the place under control..

Luckily though, the quality of the food makes up for frustration in these cases.

Run by native Thai, who know their cuisine, it is one of the very rare authentic Thai restaurants you can find anywhere near the area. The preparations are up to good and clean standard, even in Thai terms and in most cases surprisingly tasty, for very competitive price. They also offer take-away and home delivery. And a choice of Indian cuisine. When it comes to the Thai preparations, it's also the healthiest restaurant you'll find on Coldharbour lane and up with the best in the wider area. Servive is friendly. There may, depending on who serves you, communication may be a bit challenging due to language problems, minor commonication problems due to a young, very sweet young Thai waitress still learing the language, but hey are always overcome with charme.

Living in this area, and even more so being a vegetarian with otherwise very limited choices, this has often be the only polace where I could go to get a good tasty and affordable meal. If you live in the area, like exotic tastes and your vegetables to be al dente, I don't hesittate to full-heartedly reecommend this small family business.
