your comments review this restaurant and win a bottle of champagne

I am so shocked to read these reviews. We had a meal on a Sunday evening which I could only describe as awful. I am not one to normally complain however on this occasion I feel I must. On arrival we were told the table would be 5 mins, so we went to the bar and tried to order a bottle of wine whilst we waited, only to be greeted by a rather rude woman in the middle of stocking the fridges, telling us to wait until we are seated. The restaurant itself is very nice and has a lovely atmosphere about it, however the waitress who served us was not at all professional. She failed to tell us what was not available on the menu, and after ordering she returned to the table 3 times telling us what we had ordered was not available. Not apoligising, she actually found it very amusing. My starter (around £6) was meant to be an Italian meat platter, and consisted of 3 wafer thin slices of different salami, drowned in olive oil so you couldnt even taste them, on a mountain of rocket leaves. Of course they had run out of Parma ham, but surely there are different meats they could have used, and been more generous.

The main course was even worse. After not being able to have my first three choices, I settled for a veal in breadcrumbs with chips, at a mere £13.95. The veal so so greasy I couldn't eat it and the chips were not cooked ( left the lot).

When I questioned the bill at the end, and asked to see the main menu to check the prices (as I had been charged for both my main meals which were not available) again no apoligy, instead I was stared at by all the waiters in the restaurant for dare questioning the bill. needless to say, never again!! Would never recommend this place.

My partner and I ate at Amalfi on Saturday night prior to a theatre booking.

The Service was excellent, the food was wonderful and the atmosphere was enjoyable.

We would recommend this restaurant anytime.

We could not fault anything about the eating experience.

I ate at Amalfi last night (Monday) and have to say that it was quite lovely. The staff, pasta and wine were all wonderful! Not a single complaint!

Went to Amalfi last weekend and would not go back! We were sat in a booth with a leaking pipe that soaked the seat and subsequently, my coat. When we told the waiter of this he couldn't care less. We were then told that we had to be off our table in an hour - could they not tell us this before we sat down? The starter plates were cleared up straight away as our main course was queing behind. The food was average (veal burnt) and the waiter kept mixing up the wines as he topped up our glasses! And when they gave us the bill, the 12.5% discretionary service charge was automatically put onto the card. I would not go back and I would put off anyone thinking of going there...

Food was fantastic, service a bit lacking. Only been there once though, so don't know if that's standard, and also we were in a group of 8.

Would definitely go and try it again if I wasn't in too much of a rush, and would recommend to anyone else with the warning that the service was a bit slow.

Also very reasonable

My cousin took me to Amalfi Restaurant in March 1972 and thus introduced me to "real" Italian food, I then took my, now late, mother there a few weeks later and she loved it. in the summer of 1972 I went there regularly , 3 or 4 times per week, because I seemed to be always working and it served good food, had friendly staff and was reasonably priced. Subsequently I visited quite often until I left London in 1980. Nowadays I visit London 2 or 3 times per year and always go there and still one can have a good, reasonably priced, meal served by friendly staff, one whom recognises me, In fact I went their yesterday, 5th Nov 2007, and had the best pizza I've had in years.. Go there and tell your friends about it, we need more restaurants like this.

awful service waited best part of an hour to get a drink and order food, indifferent food. They want your money but don't like to serve. Ordered a basket of bread which had to be requested twice. steak overcooked rare is supposed to have some juices running. calzone smaller than average, not a lot of ham in it.

starters were good when we eventually got them.

Been going to the Amalfi for 39 years: discovered it aged fourteen; visited once/twice a week. First and every girlfriend; meaningful friends; every birthday. Rain or shine: a welcome haven. Very fond of the place; staff friendly and knew their customers well. Best Chianti/pizza in London. A book or a newspaper with just a coffee; watch the world go by; short meal before or after theatre, film, shopping, meeting or mooching about. Protracted meal; conversation; laughter. Excellent food. Gone now. Whole of Compton Street a real drag now. Soho's loss!
