Beachcomber Seafood

I cannot recommend a visit to Beachcomber seafood. The main complaint is they are overstaffed and badly organised. Six different staffmembers came to our table in the first 4 minutes to inquire if we were ready to order. Some went outside to talk on the mobile for half an hour. Nothing to do inside but steal other peoples chores.
The menu was extensive but uninspired. Change the fish and another "meuniere " is created.
The food was averedge in taste, overgreased and messy in presentation. The toilets were not well kept. The wine list was OK plenty to choose from.

excellent place, decor is a bit messy but the food is amazing, we had the whitebait and scallops for our starters, the plate of whitebait was huge and the scallops were perfect. Our main courses were just as good and in similar large quantities. I would definately go back there.

Took a friend here for his birthday having been told that it was meant to be pretty good. First impressions was that it felt quite old and in need of some modernising. The food was lovely and the fish was fresh, great bottle of Muscadet to accompany the food and the service was attentive but not pushy. On saying that, I wouldn't rush back as the atmosphere and feel of the restaurant was that they have a good trade so why bother making it look nicer. This is a restaurant that could be so much more but sadly it lacks the enthusiasm to make it spectacular. After 20 mins or so the waiter put the radio on quite loud with house music pumping out which totally threw the dining experience of a lovely fish restaurant away. If you're in Greenwich and fancy a nice lunch I would recommend going here but if it's not a special evening kind of place.

I was astonished when I stumbled across this website and found these negative reviews on the Beachcomber. Not only have I been a frequent diner over many years, it has also been my pleasure to entertain business guests, and many friends there from all over the world, all of whom, without exception, ask to be taken back, on their return to the UK. Perhaps my comparatives are slightly more upmarket than some of the other reviewers? My home being in Belgravia means that I also frequently dine in such places as Scotts, Sheekey's, Greens Champagne and Oyster Bar, and when it was still open, Manzi's. Whatver the reason, allow me to provide a factual review, if you will. The restaurant is family run, and the pride taken in the local sourcing of food from Greenwich suppliers is a joy. All fish is collected daily from Billingsgate, now across the river in East London. Even the wine list is stocked from a Greenwich wine specialist. The food is prepared to individual order with care and attention, and will be served as quickly, or as leisurely as the dinder requests. Experienced diners suely know how to request pauses between courses when required? Personal favourites, and those of my guests, in no paricular order, have been the Oysters, as fresh and fine as any in Paris, Fillet Steak, certainly the best in London, and perpared to the diners choice. Cold Sea Food Plate, a glorious'Fruit de Mare' and large enough to satisfy a huge appetite. Sea Bass, Sea Bream, Dover Sole, plain grilled to perfection, and tasting of the sea, they are so fresh, and the finest Calamari Frites I have eaten, anywhere in the world. My German friends aways praise the Fish and Chips, which they see as a typically English experience. Fresh vegetables, all perfectly cooked, potatoes cooked in any way the diner cares for them, and the best green salad outside of Lyon. The Beachcomer is a non pretencious, yes, but a warm, family run establishment, offering food, freshly purchased and individually prepared ,with a passion that made an Israeli acquaintance of mine ask if he could have the franchise rights for Tel Aviv. I imagine that Kamel, the restaurant's patron, is still considering that as an interesting business option.

Without doubt, this is the worst restaurant I have ever ever been to. On first impressions, I could see the decor was tatty & there was clutter all around the restaurant but hoped the food would make up for this. I was very wrong! Our bottle of wine looked as though it had been labelled in the kitchen & starters were on the table in 2 mins, straight from their Iceland packaging!! The main course of fillet steak & lobster was ready in the kitchen way before we had even finished our starters & we could see the inexperienced waiters flapping about shouting that we wasn't ready yet! The restaurant wasn't even busy, we were one of only 3 tables! When the main course came out, the fillet steak wasn't fillet & despite asking for it to be cooked medium rare, it was very well done. The lobster was impossible to eat even with a steak knife (!), had green flesh in places & freezer burn on the claws! All this for a £25 main meal! We refused to pay the full amount for the meal & the owner didn't even question us, which says a lot.

I’ve been a resident of Greenwich for a number of years I've always ignored the Beachcomber seafood restaurant due to is rather tatty appearance and, I'm ashamed to say, my own prejudice. I harbour misgivings concerning the standard of food in Greenwich in general. Most of the places to eat in this area are pretty bland and apart from a few notable exceptions, Greenwich is not blessed with many great restaurants.
The decor in and around the beachcomber gives the impression that they are more used to selling nothing more than fish finger sandwiches, and at the time the music blaring from the cheap stereo in the corner made me feel like I was sitting in a Margate greasy spoon "caff" rather than a restaurant. It was with a certain amount of trepidation that I surveyed the menu and wondering to myself whether the dishes were a little overpriced.
My girlfriend ordered Calamari and I, the octopus salad. We decided to both order the Paella for our main course. Informal and friendly waiters served the starter quickly. The Calamari was tender as was the octopus was served with zesty and uncomplicated lemon and olive oil dressing. The Paella was huge, not the greatest I've ever tasted but full of fish and good value.
Including drinks I paid £25 per head and I reckon if they spent a few thousand pounds on some new furniture and redecorated, Greenwich would be rewarded with what is unfortunately a rare thing in that area, a decent place to eat that serves simple but tasty food.

I have lived in Greenwich for 2 years now and often walked past this restaurant and said we must go in there, so we waited for a special occasion before we booked a table there, my boyfriends birthday. We were both really looking forward to the evening especially as we had been saying we would go there for so long and perhaps it was the hype that we had had placed in the restaurant, but we were very dissapointed to say the least.
We do not eat a lot of fish at home so therefore I'm not experienced in cooking it but I know for a fact I could have done better than what was presented to us. Both the pieces of fish were very dry and the chips were cold and stodgy. My boyfrield had the mixed seafood platter, quantity maybe, certainly not quality.
The service however was very attentive and this slightly made up for the poor food. The owners/waiters are very friendly and we stayed after our meal and had a couple of shots with them.
This restaurant has all the potential to be a great place to dine. It's location is second to none in Greenwich, but sadly I feel, because it is positioned on the main tourist thoroughfare, it has become a bit of a tourist trap and perhaps a bit gimmicky, i.e. lobsters on the wall etc. I imagine it would be nice to sit on one of the tables outside with a coffee watching the world go by but not for a quality meal.
If the "experience" of a restuarant is more important to you than the quality of the food then you may have an OK time here.

I have been going to the Beachcomber for some 15 years, and have introduced many freinds to this little gem in south east London.
The main pleasure is the food
Everything is of the very highest quality and fine ingredients make fine dining.
The cooking comes very close to prefection on most dishes. I would particularly recommend sea bass or dover sole charcoal grilled. The shell fish platters, served hot or cold are huge and great value for money.
For meat eaters go for the plain grilled fillet steak. Always gooked exacly to order ( I Like it rare!) and the osters are a pleasure at anytime of the year. ocean fresh and smelling of the sea.
Kamel the owner, and his wonderful younger brother will always do their best to provide something required that is not on the menu, and for a real English treat, why not try the Fish and Chips.
Unbeatable.
Oh and finally the house white and red are both nice French wines, but with the steak, do go for the Rioja. A crianza that rivals a Reserva, and very thoughtfully priced.
Anyone that really knows and appreciates honest and sensibly priced eating out will love this Gem!

Excellent food and the service couldn't have been better. The atmosphere is really cosy though I'm led to believe that there is plenty of seating upstairs. Prices were reasonable for what you got as the portions are big. Highly Recommended!!!!!
