L'Osteria 57

I've recently discovered this place and find it a quite delightful little restaurant. I'm going to get my one criticism out of the way; the pizza bases, of a very nice dough, were very soft and hadn't really crisped up. This is often the way I find, but I prefer a firmer texture.

However, the ingredients and flavour of the pizza were wonderful - properly seasoned (so often a fault with pizzas) - with excellent, fresh toppings. I chose bresaola and asparagus, and there was a wonderful covering of proper, fresh Parmesan (also in generous measure over my rocket salad).

Breads were good, as was the £15 Chotes-du-Rhone - the latter excellent in fact, with woody, earthy tannins and body. My date's mixed side-salad was also of pleasing quality and freshness - and well presented.

Service was outstanding; charming, friendly staff, and the atmosphere was warm with few spare tables and the kitchen buzzing.

The menu is appetising and I look forward to trying the fresh gnocchi and ravioli dishes, among others.

I have visited this restuarant many times over the last ten years. Sometimes I may not visit for a year and other times I might go there three/four times in month. As an infrequent visitor I can honestly say that it is one of my 'bankers'. Owner managed business (always better than a chain), big portions of hearty food prepared in a open plan kitchen, with a small but reasonably priced wine list. With an occasional complimentary grappa, have been known to have lunch and dinner without leaving.

I have to say; I never felt so bad with my guest for a while. Very small and sticky, the food had no taste and the presentation and service definitely need attention. Never again
