Saturday, May 07, 2011 - 'Authentic specials' include a wonderfully hot, sweet, deeply flavoured ox tripe stir-fried with chilli. I also braved yook hwe, a magnificently crazy starter of chopped raw beef, stirred with finely sliced pears, egg yolk, soy sauce and sugar, and served with the beef still partially frozen...Then it's time for the grills. The house special is marinated beef rib, cooked over the white-hot brazier and then chopped into manageable portions by a waitress with scissors. Then you wrap it in lettuce.

Saturday, April 23, 2011 - There's a black pudding soup that is oddly bland and a good cold noodle dish - both of which achieve the special softness of texture Koreans appear to crave - and then a glorious thing indeed involving an almost red-hot stone bowl into which rice, beef and vegetables are poured, crackling and protesting, then a raw egg and some chilli sauce, stir, stir, smoke, smoke, until it's all blended and hot and deep and religious with a funky brown crust seared into the porous sides of the dish, to be scratched out and crunched...All in, it is about 60 quid not counting the soju. Some very top food. A very singular experience.

I've tried Korean food a number of times now, having moved to New Malden, and it really isn't my thing. But having said that, Su La is probably as good as it gets. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful and the food pretty good - in particular some excellent dumplings and very nice marinated beef rib. So if Korean food is your bag Su La is highly recommended, and if you've never tried it this is a good place to start. As for me, I still prefer a good curry!

Was surprised by the one negative review because, while New Malden is home to some good Korean restaurants, Su La thoroughly deserves the praise it has received from others. The first positive for us was discovering Koreans as well as Europeans eating there. The atmosphere was warm and the service very friendly, with the girls happy to patiently explain some of the more obscure foods and make helpful suggestions. Then there was the food. Delicious - spiced and garlicky but not overmuch for European palettes and full of taste and texture. We opted for a series of BBQ dishes, cooked at the table, and would have happily re-ordered any of them. Don't get put off by Su La's location - the Kingston Road is pretty unprepossessing - because then you will be missing out on a real taste treat.

I couldn't disagree more with the negative review. I've been to Su La three or four times now with different sized parties and each time the food has been delicious and the hospitality wonderful.

If you want to try Korean Food this is the place to try it. And once you've tried it you'll go back again and again.

I went to Su La last night and thought it was awful.

The food can be best described as dull and the emphasis is on quantity rather than quality.

I had one starter (the pancake) which is a stodgy, greasy, doughy and pretty tasteless splodge accompanied by small dishes of tasteless vegetables.

My main was spicy chicken and rice and there is just about nothing I can say about it.

The environs of the restaurant are grim and the actual restaurant is shoddy.

Oh, and one starter, one main and one beer cost 30 quid.

If this is the best that Korea has to offer I am very glad I don't live there.

Have been quite a lot of time to that restaurant and i have to say that all staff are very pleasant and helpful.

Food is excellent. With a very quick service.

The starters are very good. Try the sweet chilly and the toasted dumplings.

The only Korean place i would go to again and again.
