Madras (Lewisham)

I have probably been to Madras 40 times in the last 2 years since I first discovered it. The service was a little unfriendly at first and I was a bit taken aback by the tatty state of the toilets and the decor, but what makes this a restaurant I visit so regularly is the outstanding quality of the food, but particularly in my case, the wheat free vegetarian options (yes, I know I'm a pain in the neck!).
You do have to pick carefully, ie, don't even bother with the onion bhajis as they are like rubber, but if you stick with the tradtional South Indian food, ie, the uttapams and the dosas, you will not go wrong.
You might find some of the dishes not as spicy if you are used to a bog standard British Indian restaurant, but if you ask how spicy particular dishes are in if they can spice them up to your liking, they have always obliged.
There is only one choice of red wine and one choice of white, but the glasses are huge, very gluggable and under £3 a glass.
I really cannot recommend this place highly enough.

i have just left the madras restaurant and i have got to say it was the worst meal i have ever had.i have lived in catford all my life and tried most of the local indian restaurants and this is the worst by far the worst..lets start with the service i asked for drinks and after 10 minutes the waiter brought them over so i reminded him it was a vodka and lemonade not a lemon and lime, popadams came with one dip when i asked if there was anymore dips he said yes and walked off what an idiot he seemed to be.20 minutes later he came over to take our order now i know its an indian restaurant but surely you would expect him to understand english expected to much i guess.lucky enough during the 45 minutes we had to wait for the the food i had time to look at the decor white washed walls last decorated in the 70's ha ha.when the food arrived half was cold and the rest seemed microwaved.the waiter put the food on the edge of the table and just walked off totally disinterested.all the food seemed to have bits of a forest in it i've eaten boney fish with less trouble.decided i'd had enough got up asked for the bill and left i would never go back how this indian.i dont know how it survives as there are so many better indian restaurants in the area. ps dont use the mens toilets as there was no toilet roll or paper towels in there.
