I've eaten several times in The White Hart and it has been variable. It's a nice pub, with a raised level around the windows which makes it a nice place to sit and watch the world go bye outside. The food I've had has ranged from being excellent to being rather average. The tables are always sticky which is a bit off-putting and the prices are pretty full. But generally it's a good place and I'll keep going back there every so often.

The horror, the horror

Popped in for lunch the other day and was submitted to a master class in poor cooking. We were greeted by a very pleasant waitress who was attentive and prompt. In the mood for something hearty we were drawn toward the pies (amongst an amazingly long, yet not very enticing menu).

The first course was a warning unheeded, a goats cheese and tomato tart which was a pre-bought pastry case in which were placed two slices of tomato topped with a slice of goats’ cheese. The remarkable combination of over cooked pastry with uncooked contents was (if intentional) unique. Luckily to prevent the dish from drying the palate we had chosen the house red which came over like drinking a glass of starburst chews.

The mains built upon this pastry theme by presenting us with a new concept in overcooking. Bonsai themed overcooking, where a tiny pie is cooked until it ceases to exist as a pie and is now a super concentrated ball of matter when if touched or moved would disintegrate and the delicate form that had been created over many years in the oven would be gone forever.

They were sent back and using the principle that real mistakes are when one has to do it twice for it to count. We asked for rare steak and crispy chips. We received crispy steaks and rare (undercooked and too few of them) chips.

Im going to write a review of somwhere nice now to balance out my karma

I've eaten here several times since it replaced the slightly substandard tapas place that was here before, and it's a great improvement. The food is well cooked and well presented with a fantastic varied menu that changes every few days, dishes in the past that have caught the eye include monkfish wrapped in pancetta, lamb rack, lemon sole, a truely delicious seafood rissotto. The menu always includes a range of steaks and burgers that are great meat and perfectly cooked. The puddings are very good and the service friendly and helpful. There's a decent range of beers and a very good selection of wine. All in all it's well worth a visit, the food isn't cheap, but it's very good value.
