Kyoto last week provided me with the best sashimi in London so far. Went for the Omakase Sashimi and was just very positively surprised by the quality and type of fish (uni, toro, etc.) as well as the presentation
Highly, highly recommended!

Although I expected a good taste, I was extremely depressed.
Vegitables which in a Katsudon was burnt, rice was too least for Pork Katsu.
Sushi's fish was drenched and not tasty, also rice was too least.
I'm assuming I'll never go there again.

After reading some reviews from London-eating, finally had a lunch at Kyoto restaurant. Excellent!! It's a real sushi restaurant in London. most of customers are Asian, as the taste is real Japanese food. I found some very local menu which cannot be found from other Japanese restaurant. Lunch set menu is around £6-10, includes miso soup and salad. very fresh and delightful. The inner atmosphere is pleasant and clean and staffs are very welcoming.
If you want high quality sushi taste in much cheaper price, highly recommend this restaurant!! it's same taste as top Japanese restaurants in London over £40. definitely will return again!!

Excellent value for money. Not fine dining but good Japanese home cooking, excellent sashimi and a good range of bento's.
My favourite Japanese when I am in London for the day. You can have a good meal for less than £20 a head which is a bargain compared to many Japanese restaurants.
Probably authenticated by the large number of younger (student?) Japanese who frequent it.
Service is also, whilst not polished, more than adequate and friendly, something not always found in Japanese restaurants.
Some of the more expensive ones especially seem to fall down on the fiendliness of service.

I love this place! If you're looking to spend under £50 a meal for decent sushi or sashimi, then this is where you should come. The fish is succulent and fresh, you get large portions and they use real crab in their California rolls instead of that cheap crabstick stuff you get in other restaurants. Their chefs are Korean, but there is an improvement in quality rather than not. I've been to the place next door, but the food isn't as good as Japan. At least this place is closer than a lot of others (and I've tried a lot).
If they're busy (at the usual hours), then the service will occasionally slow down - but I'm willing to keep going here while they constantly maintain their high standards in cuisine. Their service is pleasant, and the decor is okay.
In the same price range and the same area, you'll find: that place next door (always forget the name), Taro, Ten Ten Tei, Kulu Kulu, Japan Centre, random ones in Chinatown nearby - let's not mention how bad Yo Sushi is shall we?
Why aren't there more Japanese restaurants of a quality similar to that of Tokyo? Or even of Paris - which for some reason has way more Japanese speciality restaurants.

I have been to Kyoto many times, both in the new location and when it was in the much smaller premises next door - I will continue to return because of the excellent quality of the sushi and value for money that is second to none.
The staff are always friendly and welcoming, they always remember me and know how to treat loyal customers. The owner Kim is often around and happy to share his expertise if you are interested.
I must admit, i am such a big fan of the sushi that i haven't tried too many of the hot dishes on the menu - except the noodles, which are also fantastic. This place is all about the sushi though, the salmon sashimi is superb, as is the tuna, generously sliced and wonderfully fresh. The soft shell crab maki are one of the best i have had, and fantastic value for money. The dumplings are delicious, the spicy tuna rolls are a firm favourite, i have yet to put a foot wrong on the menu.
My advice is to go and share lots of sushi dishes. The wine list is limited, but if they don't have a wine you like drink sake! It is a very relaxed atmosphere and not formal in the slightest.

After extensive searching on London Eating for a good Japanese restaurant, to hopefully rival Nobu, I booked Kyoto. We understood by the reviews that the food was going to be excellent, and having tried unsuccessfully to book Roca and Zuma, we took the plunge. We were a little taken aback however on our arrival, the restaurant is actually a cafe! All dressed up for a night on the town but feeling we were being shoved into this very informal back room was a little surreal but we tried to get into the mood. The food was pretty good though, the sushi was excellent, as was the tempura prawns. The curry was a little dissappointing but on the whole we enjoyed it and it was really good value for money. The service was great and we were made to feel really welcome. I suppose the whole point to this review is just to let future diners know that this is not a showy venue, just turn up in your jeans and jumper and you'll fit right in - for something more special, try Nobu - if the budget allows!

I love popping over to Kyoto for lunch or dinner, as I live locally I feel lucky to have a decent Japanese/Korean restaurant nearby . However, it takes certain confidence to order the 'right' kind of food or you will feel rather disappointed on your way out. My tip for the beginners is to SHARE....I recommend ordering a selection from the extensive menu and explore your taste bud, which will come handy for your next visit. My current favourite is prawn tempura.
Try to ignore the slow service and lack of communication with the waiting staff. Just sit back and enjoy Japanese beer or sake, served hot or cold in a very relaxing atmosphere of this small but skilful restaurant.

We dined at Kyoto for the first time last Thursday with a friend who was visiting London, and we very disappointed. The restuarant was not busy and we were seated straight away. The staff were friendly enough, but the service was awful. It took over 30mins just to take our drink orders, and service continued to be very slow all night. We ordered starters and mains, but then two of the mains (there were 3 of us) were delivered first, then 2 starters and then a main and a starter. The chicken teriyaki was served cold, and looked straight out of the fridge - not appetising at all. Similarly the beef skewers starter was cold. At one point two staff were arguing infront of us at our table about whether to serve the skewers because they we cold. Eventually they took them away to be reheated, along with the chicken teriyaki. The sushi was good, however. The final straw was that our sake was completely forgotten. The beef skewers and miso soup was deducted from our bill, but I will not be returning to Kyoto again.
