The White Horse

We went to the White Horse for Sunday lunch while staying in the area, and absolutely loved it. It was the nicest roast I've had outside my mum's house! The beef was roasted to specification (no idea how they did that, but I ended up with perfectly medium-rare meat), and the roast potatoes were stonking - really crunchy, and they tasted rich, like they'd been roasted in goose fat. My husband had a chicken pie, which was really good too - very nicely prepared and with a really good sauce. I finished with a fantastic chocolate torte - not the usual smoothe just-cream-and-chocolate sort, but rich, cakey and grainy, and served with really nice fruit coulis. It was great value at £15.95 for two sizeable courses.
The place could be described as a bit over-designed - it's kooky and funky, but not a comfy place to be, with incongruous chandeliers and designer (read: uncomfortable) chairs. Service was quick and courteous but not very warm, but again, teensy-weensy complaint. Neither of these things made the whole experience any less than really excellent. We totally loved it and would go again tomorrow if it weren't an hour and a half away!

Loved it ! was recommended to go here when in the area - and was certainly a great recommendation - food was gorgeous - very fresh and seasonal, nice looking pub/restaurant, amazing views from the garden. Good to see 'gastro' pubs like this in the 'sticks ' - where you can actually enjoy very decent food !

Decided on the White Horse for an 'out of London' Saturday lunch. It took an hour to get there but was worth every minute! The decor is chic yet comfortable and the owners and staff could not be more welcoming. The menu surprised us all, contemporary and yet homely. I had the sea bass, which was fantastic and the 3 ‘ultra skinny’ girls I was with practically licked their plates clean!
We ate in the dining room but there is also an outdoor area with beautiful views and an aroma wafting past from the large herb and vegetable garden the pub has.
We had drinks in the bar area after lunch and enjoyed the atmosphere of this little gem. If you go, make sure you read the article up on the wall in this area beside the bar, its hilarious!!

Hmm... if the loos were outside, then where exactly did I...? I gladly agree with the majority of comments made and rate my experience at the White Horse as excellent. Coming in from a cold walk around near-by Bodiam Castle, we were welcomed into the pub's easy, warm and bright atmosphere. Relaxed in my oversized tall leather throne, a hot bowl of sweet and spicy roast garlic and potato soup was washed down by perfectly conditioned (and very local) Harveys Best. The main, roast sirloin accompanied by an impressively large Yorkshire pudding, was tender and flavourful. Desert was spot-on: a refreshingly tart lemon tart balanced with flambéed sugar on top for just a touch of caramelized sweetness. Great service, which is such a relief coming from London, and at great price (three-course for £17.95, I believe). One last thing, the views from the patio are amazing (take a look)!

Unfortunately the weather didn’t allow us to make use of the wonderful patio/garden at the back of the pub, which has great views over the Weald. But the décor inside more than made up for the weather, as did the food. I was on a day’s excursion with my mother-in-law, and so the The White Horse was conveniently located for our visit to Battle and Bodiam Castle. Being a Sunday, we had roast beef and roast lamb, both of which were deliciously cooked, and the friendly staff were obliging when we asked for a child-sized portion for our 6 year old daughter. The Harvey’s Best on hand-pump was in top condition, and my wife and mother-in-law both enjoyed the Shiraz. It was also good to see the kitchen garden in full use, which I later learnt was used for the pub kitchen. Given the convenient location and good food/drink, I’m sure to return to this friendly-run pub.

What does she mean the loos are outside? perhaps she was too drunk to realise that indeed you go through a door to the loos, but they are very much inside and very clean and homely loos at that. You cannot fault the food, it is simply to die for and the wine list is outstanding. The prices simply match those of all the decent pubs and restaurants in Kent and Sussex and it is by no means over priced. I recommend the White Horse to everyone who enjoys their food in a gorgeous ambiance and wonderfully friendly staff and owner.

Visited this pub with two local friends last weekend. The pub offers nice views, but leave the food as small portions and expensive. £129 for three (1 cheap bottle of wine). Run by a foreign chap who rushed us out to sit next punters down. Loos outside..

Visited last weekend – recommended by a friend. Really nice restaurant with great bar and terrace to the rear with beautiful views of the rolling Sussex countryside behind. Very relaxing atmosphere. We had Terrine to start and then Pork fillet and Duck for the mains and both were really delicious with a good range of choice on the wine list too. Would thoroughly recommend and will visit again.
