Tuesday, January 06, 2009 - It's a truly beautiful room, though – one of the few in London that can genuinely drop jaws – crowned with a striking stained-glass cupola. There's an illuminated walk-in wine room and cheese store like a suburban party-giver's wet dream… Teague's food is good although, like Paula Abdul, it's a little small and overwrought. Some dishes are actively brilliant: hen pheasant, for instance, braised slowly in cider, with an utterly splendid, buttery pithivier of the pheasant's leg…

Thursday, November 27, 2008 - The place is a real looker, its handsome, spacious Victorian dining room updated but not ruined by huge lamps that look like the tassels on a burlesque dancer. Coming in off loud, scuzzy Liverpool Street, there’s a palpable sense of relief at finding somewhere so calm and airy. But it’s the food that’s the main draw. The well-sourced Anglo-French menu boasts intricate dishes that somehow never feel fussy.

This restaurant has indeed a beautiful interior. It is grand and fancy. Service is also very good and friendly, not intrusive. Food wise it is a let-down, I don't know, may be because we had this offer: £21 for three courses and you get what you pay for, but food is indeed a let down. A lot of people bringing their coats into the restaurant, instead of using a wardrobe.

Absolutely fantastic!

The space is one of the most brilliant in London soaring to a vast stained glass dome. The food and service manage to exceed the magnificence of the space.

I decided to have my birthday lunch at 1901 and it was one of those meals which one will recall in years to come. The service was warm, cordial and unobtrusive. Joris is passionate about his craft and matching the correct wine with the food. All of the staff seem very proud of their restaurant and the service is seamless... and the food is even better.

The smoked haddock starter with a lovely sherry was the stuff of dreams. The lamb with an amazing red wine (selected by Joris and perfect for the meal) made one want the afternoon not to end. After the indifferent condescension of the Connaught and the risible incompetence at Dukes, 1901 was a revelation. Superb food matched with attentive service which all looked effortless.

If you are anywhere near Liverpool Street, add this to your dining agenda. What a fantastic afternoon.

Went as a party of 10 for the 25 pound 3 course meal with glass of champagne.

Overall I was very impressed.

First of all the room is stunning and the staff and service are excellent.

Despite my usual reservations about choice and quality of food on set menus, the food was very good and every person in my group was more than satisfied.

Would definitely go back.

This restaurant is absolutely fantastic! The room is stunning with its ornate features, the dome is really pretty. The service was top class, we were treated like royals! The food was amazing, especially the beef, perfectly cooked.

Would definately recommend this restaurant, its not cheap but you get what you pay for and more!

i just had one of the worst experience that i had in my life..

I came to eat with my girlfriend two nights ago at the 1901 restaurant in Liverpool street and what a bad idea..at the arrival we were welcoming by the manager of the place..really proud about his team and the sublime food who suppose to be serve in this location..at his look everythink it suppose to be absolutly amazing but at the end we left just disappointed and with a big smile in our face!apparently here the smile is playing a BIG part of the game and can be use to cover silly mistake and the mediocrity of the food who is serve it!

If these is the future of the fine dinning experince in london i don't want to be part of it and in these place they call that new concept of restauration...i didn't really get what they mean but anyway is not that impressive!!!!!!

very nice place to eat - the food was excellent with solid British sourced ingredients that are seasonal-ish. The pea veloute was gorgeous. The room is beautiful. We ate on a special offer, which was good value, although the wine list is a littel pricey, especially if you want something Spanish.

Friday, November 20, 2009 - Food was straightforward, classic and mostly executed with an understated flair; save for a choice of meat I had yet to tame, everything else was rather tasteful. We ended the evening with a creme brulee topped off with abit of fruit and ice cream, and walked away with a pleasant memory of the night. In my humble opinion, it was still abit too posh for a quiet dinner and I come away feeling that 1901 is a place more suited for business rather than pleasure.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat - 6.5/10

Monday, May 18, 2009 - The food wavered from average (starters) to good (mullet and dessert) to very good (the lamb), and so I would rate it overall as a ‘good’. £25 was a fair enough price to pay for what we had for a lunch menu. The setting is beautiful, the service is friendly, and so its not a bad spot for Liverpool Street. But there were some mistakes, and so if I was to choose from the more expensive `a la carte menu, I would hope the cooking is a little tighter and more consistent, otherwise I might not think that it was worth the extra money.
