The Providores

Had a fantastic and very leisurely brunch there on Saturday. Yes, it's expensive but the food was extremely good, as were juices, coffees and a nice drop of fizz... Only let down was the unsmiling, inattentive waiter; the right service could have made this perhaps the best place to go for brunch in London.

A place to avoid unless you're a posh B*****D and have loads of cash to waste. Unfriendly staff, and everything you purchase is overpriced. Would rather get a baguette and some cheese from Waitrose and eat standing in the high street.

Reading these reviews is always a bit of a risk, as nowhere is perfect and even the odd bad review can put one off trying a new experience. So... it was with some trepidation that I booked The Providores for a dinner for two. It was early in the week so not particularly busy, but I have to say it was a wonderful experience. I've eaten at many of London's best restaurants and the food, ambience and service were spot on.

Went for lunch in the restaurant upstairs and had a really lovely lunch. I had beef and my two companions had the lamb. We all dipped in to Kumara and drank passion fruit 42 below a really New Zealand influence.
The service wasn’t fantastic but they were laid back enough to let us sit and drink well into the late afternoon so must say that was an added bonus.
I wouldn’t rush back there but I’d say go if someone else is paying!

If this is representative of the service in London restaurants, I'm glad I don't eat out in town very often. We went for a Birthday Dinner in the upstairs restaurant on a Tuesday evening and were kept weaiting for AGES for an initial drink, to take food orders and for wine orders etc. We all had almost the same food - the pumpkin soup was superb, but the lamb was virtually raw and vegetables practically non-existent, hidden under the lamb. The deserts were miniscule, to say the least - not so much nouvelle cuisine, as no - cuisine! £40 seemed expensive for this fixed-price meal and the beers were £5-7 and wines were all £30 + so the £70 per head seemed poor value, even if the service had been good - which it definitely wasn't. Sorry, but this barely rates 4/10 as far as I'm concerned - and that's being generous.

We ate in the upstairs more formal restaurant and what an amazing meal we had. The smoked dutch eel was one of the most amazin dishes I have ever eaten!!!The service was superb with lovely friendly staff. The main course of Halibut with cassava crust and pea puree with was simply superb. Dont miss out on the desserts either, feel free to ask the staff advice on the wine and the food all their suggestions were spot on. The tapa room downstairs was so packed but great vibe but upstairs is the place to be!

This place is appalling from a service point of view. I was there for brunch and they refused to accomodate one of our party's dietary restrictions, leaving her to eat nothing while the rest of us tried to get out of there as quickly as possible since our orders had already been placed while they were checking whether the chef could cook egg whites or not. I dont care how busy a place is, but if they would rather have a guest starve(when the menu is almost all eggs) than ask the chef to take 10 secs out of his time to separate the yolk, then I have no interest in ever coming back ! Poor service, rude maitre'd, and mediocre food to top it all off! I'm not going back.

DO NOT GO here if you expect any kind of service whatsoever. We went for brunch last sunday and my friend can't eat egg yolks. Strange but true and since the entire menu consisted of eggs and one porridge dish only, we asked if they could make anything with just egg whites. The answer to that was no even after we explained the situation to them. Surprisingly, the reason given is that the chef is too busy at brunch time to remove yolks. Even someone working at McDonalds wouldn't be challenged by that! And to make matters worse, the so-called manager (who really ought to consider exiting his role immediately as his people skills are the poorest I've seen) was rude enough to offer zero alternatives to the menu and actually told us not to come back if we didn't like it. Horribly rude staff, mediocre food, and cramped quarters make this a big NO in my book.

Dined at the Tapa Bar here on Sunday afternoon. Food was excellent as was the wine and beer ( mac's Gold). Recommend the mixed tapas plate and the soft crab with coconut.
I was incorrectly billed for a bottle of wine when we only had a glass. But this issue was dealt with quickly and with many apologies.
I think it was testimony to the quality of the of the food that I glady paid £25 over the actual price without checking the bill in the restaurant. Only realised the over billing down the road !
