Lunch in The Eagle for the first time a week ago. It was great. Not too busy at 1 pm and we got a table immediately. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was great. Steak was succulent and cooked just as asked as was the cod topped with tapande. We finsihed off with a plate of great Manchego with figs and a Custard Tart. Brilliant. Faultless cooking. Wine was great by the glass but the Cava was a liitle expensive! I would go again tomorrow. Good food, great atmosphere. We left at 2.30 wishing we could have stayed for the rest of the day!

I love the Eagle. It's what a gastro pub should be - a bit shabby but with great tasting honest food.

The menu changes daily (sometimes hourly if one dish sells out very quickly), but they have some staples - Bife Ana (marinated steak sandwich), always a pasta dish, always a veggie dish. It's impossible to go hungry, the food is simple and hearty. To those negative comments below, I'd say that the people who wrote them are more used to the ghastly "restuarants with a pub attached" that have proliferated in the wake of the Eagle's success.

They have a good wine list, serve excellent beer (Charles Wells and Belgian beers on tap), and best of all, their own "Rock Shandy". It's a refreshing concoction of freh lemon, angosturas, lemonade and soda. Really lovely if you need to keep a clear head in the afternoon.

The staff are always friendly and helpful (despite the fact they seem to change quite often). They play an eclectic and always interesting mix of music, but seemingly only when the noise level of conversation makes it almost impossible to hear!

If you want fine dining go elsewhere. If you want good honest food in a wonderful informal atmosphere it's worth the journey. The only fault I can find is that there is no beer garden - if you want to sit outside you're on the Farringdon Road...

Maybe it ws the first gastro, but things have moved on a bit unlike The Eagle. When I asked for pasta instead of potatoes I was told all meals were "set" when I question why the staff begrudingly went and asked the chef if it was ok (which it was).

Average food with less than average service!
