Beer- naturally

Invited to a ‘Beer & Oyster’ tasting recently at The White Horse pub on Parsons Green, a tasting organised as part of the Beer Naturally campaign to get more of us thinking about changing our drinking habits and accompanying our meals with beers.

beerBeer as an accompaniment to food is a tradition that dates back centuries, but in recent years the increasing availability and affordability of wines from across the globe has changed our quaffing habits quite considerably.  The Beer Naturally campaign is working on challenging the trends of recent decades and encouraging us to sample the delights of the diverse range of beers that are available to us whether eating formally, or informally, at home, in pubs or in restaurants.

IWe sampled a range of beers to see how they stood up to the full flavours of oysters and prawns and the delicateness of seared scallops.  Kasteel Cru, has a light palate cleansing taste, very pleasant but overshadowed by the oysters.  Gulpener Korenwolf with its banana and bubblegum notes and Gonzo Imperial Stout with its soft bitterness and depth of flavour each worked well, contrasting nicely with the saltiness of the food.  Deus with its fresh, fruity, fragrant flavours, was a magnificent beer that really worked well.  Duvel’s clean flavour supported some very good fresh prawns nicely.  Worthington White Shield and Innis and Gunn Oak Aged Beer each partnered the seared scallops well.

All in all this was a very enjoyable tasting experience and one that I would recommend anyone to try.  So, next time you are in a pub, or restaurant and are debating about which wine to choose with your meal, take a look at the beer range as well, you might be very pleasantly surprised!
