Tuttons Brasserie review by Mike
WATCH FOR THE 'RECOMMENDED GRAT'
Ate here early Monday evening, following a beautiful spring day. On a business trip, I was eating alone, staying nearby. This appeared to be one of the best-looking, mid-priced, mid-range-menu places at Covent Garden. Eveything went fairly much as you'd expect (although I had to hunt for someone to show me to a seat - maybe they didn't want my custom). Wine was nice enough - and available by the glass so I could mix-and-match. Food was unspectacular but not disappointing. Crabcake starter was a little bland but OK. I chose a steak for main course and for some reason it was impossible to have this without a sauce (even though this came as a side dish!?) Fries were inexcusably limp but mayonnaise provided on request.
When time came to pay, I had credit card to the ready. The waiter told me how much it was (bill was placed in folded card on table) and duly typed the amount into his machine. I willingly accepted and I offered 10% tip when the machine prompted me - service had been OK but not spectaular. It was only afterwards that I double checked bill and discovered that 'Recommended Grat 15%' had been added to the bill.
OK - so I'd been foolish not to check but waiter had also made a point of not brining it to my attention! On my way out I suggested to the waiter that 25% was a hefty tip, recommending the default 'gratuity' should be highlighted (as it is in other establishments who feel it necessary to increase the bill without asking). A short shrug and off he went, guaranteeing I would never return and ensuring I would leave my thoughts on any review site willing to listen.
