The Scolt Head review by Avnish Sood

Having read the reviews I felt tempted to take a 30 mile round trip to The Scolt Head last night to see for myself. I booked a table for two for my wife and I for 8.30 pm. I need not have bothered to as there was only one other table occupied in the dining area. When we entered we were soon greeted with a cheery “Are you here to eat? Have you booked? Sit anywhere”. The atmosphere was a refreshing change from similar establishments in our area of Chigwell and my wife was visibly pleased with the choice. We waited a good ten minutes before a pleasant young lady sauntered over to ask us for our order. When my wife asked for water, she was given the choice of tap water which is unusual but I was pleased with this as this was rare in my experience as most establishments only offer bottled water for which they can charge. A good start I thought. We waited quite some time for my smoked salmon on toast, spinach, poached egg and Hollandaise (7.75) and my wife’s linguine, roast courgettes and pesto (8.00). The wait was not unpleasant as the atmosphere was good and after 18 years together my wife and I have a lot that we can talk about. In any case having sat next to the toilets we were kept entertained by a stream of people, most of whom were warmly tipsy, go in an out including the cheery barman who had greeted us who visited the toilets 3 times during our 95 minutes at dinner. The third time he apologised for the delay in us receiving our meals but we were not concerned about the delay. What did puzzle both of us though was the featuring on the menu and portions of the meals we ordered given that this was to be our dinner. My meal was something that I would rather have for breakfast on a Sunday morning reading the Sunday papers. It seemed a strange item to put on a dinner menu. I could tell that my wife would not be satisfied with her meal. Nonetheless the food was pleasant if not filling. We will return but only if we are in the area looking for a light lunch.
