maze review by Sarah

Party of 4 for early lunch - we opted for the 4 course lunch menu and ordered a couple of extra dishes to try along with our 1st starter. (nb the bread was very good!)

From what we tried, the best dishes were:

pumpkin soup with ceps and a tiny individual brioche, scallops on pork belly with chestnut butter, "prawn sandwich" (misleading description....a tiny toasted sandwich on the side of 2 giant prawns with sauce), rice pudding.

The main courses were good but not fantastic:

Crab risotto with a fairly large piece of daurade.

Beef bourguignon with pommes puree.

The foie gras was ok but not the best and the tuna and swordfish carpaccio was interesting (and very well presented), but again not the best.

The banana and chocolate trifle concoction was not good at all (especially with the odd pineapple granite on top), although the miniature banana and almond muffin that accompanied it was very good.

Portion sizes for this set lunch were very good - 4 courses is enough! It is a very good value menu. Many of the dishes are the same as on the tasting menu.

Service is good (perhaps we were lucky to get a good waiter), except the topping up of water glasses every minute, which is ridiculous. I also did not think it was normal for the sommelier and waitress to both try every bottle of wine that was opened....

Overall very good food, good service, relaxed atmosphere and reasonable price.
