Michael Moore review by J & Dee
This is the fourth time we have been to M.M., and the fourth time I have written a review following the event. Sadly this is the first time the review will not be 100% complimentary.
This is not to say we didn’t have a good time, and that the food wasn’t good, because we did and it was.
Michael Moore used to be the best kept secret in London, and though the prices were on the high side, it still offered unrivalled value for money, in terms of the quality of food, ambience and service.
The 3 previous times we have eaten there, we were greeted with a complimentary Kia Royale. Now they offer it to you, and charge you £10 a drink (I only said yes out of habit as I assumed it was free – my mistake, and not one I’ll make again in a hurry!).
Starters range from £6,50 - £9,50, which is not far off where they last were, however it’s the prices of the main which have taken this into the category of “very special occasion only” – our steaks were £29 each, and any extras (mash/veggies) were £3,50. No more potato wedges served with your meal etc.
Steaks were cooked to perfection, and the starters (though tiny) were excellent. Food is still very very good.
Bill for 3 starters, 3 mains, 1 desert, 1 Irish coffee and 2 coffees, 1 bottle of wine (£23) + 3 Kia Royales came to £210 for 3 people. OK, it would have been £180 had I known in advance that the complimentary cocktails were anything but complimentary.
On the previous 3 occasions we left saying that we should not wait so long before returning – now we are asking ourselves whether or not we will go back. £70+ a head is Ok when you’re going to Nobu/Claridges etc – but half the appeal (natch) about Michael Moore’s was that it managed to stay reasonable in price.
Potentially the end of an era in our lives, as MM was always (by a long way) our favourite restaurant in London.
