Golden Hind review by Joshua

Went to the Golden Hind recently after a long string of disappointing spots around London: Masters Superfish, Fryers Delight & Rock and Sole Plaice. Immediately upon entering you are welcomed by extremely friendly staff, and unlike most chippers, a decidedly upbeat and pleasant environment. The room looks very art-deco (albeit rather sparse) and the beautiful original chrome deep-fryer sits at the back wall, now used as storage place, but adds authenticity.

The fish itself is amazing. The batter was completely crisp with zero 'slime' between the batter and the fish -- a serious pet-peeve --, and the fish tasted very fresh with very little fishiness (my girlfriend, a fervent fish despiser, was even willing to try a few bites). The chips were excellent as well, cut thick yet still soft in the middle and crunchy on the outside.

In the rear of the restaurant is a sign which lists the consecutive owners from conception (I believe only 5 people have owned the restaurant over something like 80 years), first run by Italians, now run by Greeks.

I cannot recommend the Golden Hind enough. Unlike most fish'n'chip restaurants it isn't the least bit dingy or depressing, there are no foul smells, and the clientèle aren't scuzzy / unkempt / chavs. Its a perfect example of formica tabled old-time diner style that has been kept up by fastidious owners. Don't bother with F'n'C elsewhere in London....!
