La Trompette review by Amanda Burns

Having dined at the Glass House in the past I decided to take my fiancé to La Trompette for his birthday on Monday evening as a change.

We arrived early and were seated straight away however it went downhill from there.

We were asked if we would like aperitifs but decided that we would like to order some wine straight away, we had to ask three times before the sommelier came over. Twenty minutes had passed by the time we recieved it. We also decided not to have starters so were told when we both ordered the duck that it would be about a 20 minute wait for our food. Not great as we were both very hungry but at least we were informed. However over 20 minutes went by and there was still no sign of the food. We asked the Maitre’d and he said that it would be out in four minutes and ours would be the next main course out of the kitchen. Four minutes passed and it was now 40 minutes since we had ordered so I called the Maitre’d over. As I started to talk to him our food arrived so he tried to fob me off by saying that it was here now and tried to turn away from me. I asked him not to turn away and to please listen to me. I then simply said that we were there for a special occasion and how disappointed I was.

Yes the food was lovely but we were so hungry by then we really couldn’t appreciate it as much as we would have liked.

As the food arrived my fiancé requested some bread, it never arrived. As the Maitre’d cleared out plates he told him this, the Maitre’d did not respond so he repeated himself to which the Maitre’d said” I heard you”.

I has no idea that La Trompette had recently been awarded a Michelin star and after dining there I am surprised that it has one.

We stayed and had lovely desserts with wine recommended by the sommelier, who was very polite and professional. When the bill came the Maitre’d told us without any charm that he had taken the service charge off the bill, I should think so too.

What should have been a lovely relaxed evening was spoilt by the terrible and unapologetic service of the Maitre’d.

I am pleased that so many other people have nothing but praise for La Trompette but bitterly disappointed that we did not have the same experience. We shall not be dining there again.
