1901 @ Andaz (formerly Aurora) review by monty

I took advantage of the three courses for £29 offer for my birthday on Monday 31 March 2008. Of my party of four, half of us was disappointed with the food. I had the pork, which was very tasty, but the rest of the plate was insubstantial, consisting of foam and tiny shards of vegetable. A friend had the goat's cheese tart, expecting crumbly, white goat's cheese inside. Instead, it oozed melted, fatty, yellow cheese, reminiscent of student digs cheese on toast. Another friend had the pollock. I tried it, and it tasted greasy and dull. Neither of them finished their mains.

The service was excellent, and the maitre d' was concerned that one of my party had left nearly all of his meal. He offered a complimentary liqueur or choice of cheeses. As my friend felt like taking neither, he remained uncompensated for his disappointment.

The glorious surroundings need a decent number of diners to bring them to life, something which was lacking that (Monday) night.
