Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's review by Rosie

Just had dinner at Claridges, Sunday May 4th 2008.It was for a special birthday and I am a huge fan of Mr Ramsay but unfortunately this did not live upto my expectations,it reminded me of Leonardo arriving for his dinner on the Titantic.Claridges is over priced and pretentious, the staff are TOO attentive almost eavesdropping and with quite a pompous attitude. This unfortunately detracts from what you are there for - the FOOD. It is good but portions are small ( why does great food almost always mean small portions???). The wine list or "bible" is ridiculous and takes you an age to wade through with the most extravagant prices. We had the 3 course a la carte as the waiter would only allow us to have the gourmet menu if we both had it - something along the lines of one of us would be eating a course whilst the other wasn't and this would effect the gastric juices and effect the taste blah blah...Basically that should be our decision and we should have ordered what we wanted but easily intimidated by the occasion.Dress code is NOT adhered to as a man with ripped jeans and trainers was shown a table - I do NOT think Mr Ramsay would have approved but obviously money talks. The bill £280 for 2 people a tad hefty . I recommend Gordon's Boxwood cafe to experience his influence and enjoy the superb food in a much more relaxed atmosphere and slightly larger portions too.
