Le Boudin Blanc

Very average food and indifferent service. We got the impression that the chef didn't care about the quality of the dishes. Also, this is a French restaurant that charges for bread! Do not waste your money but go to Galvin Bistrot de Luxe instead for decent French food and a nice evening for the same price.

Dabbous

I found the service to be very friendly and efficient. However, the food was extremely disappointing, definitely a case of style over substance. The hen's egg was delicious and would have been a lovely amuse bouche. The braised halibut was pretty bland, swimming in a cream sauce. The Iberian pork had been initially cooked in a water bath (sous vide) but was tough and it's only saving grace was the nice smokey taste. It was served with turnip tips which were very stringy and undercooked so difficult to chew, and flavoured with apple cider vinegar which I found to be slightly too acidic. The chocolate brioche was nice but served with a barley malt ice cream which was unpleasant. All in all, I did not feel I had one decent course and felt cheated having spent £119 for two with only one glass of wine. Dabbous reminded me of Hedone in Chiswick which also received rave reviews but fails to deliver a satisfying meal.

LIMA

Wow this restaurant is amazing! Our Chilean waiter was very welcoming and took the time to clearly explain the menu and make recommendations. The food was fabulous, based on Peruvian ingredients but with a modern twist. The braised octopus starter was melt-in-the mouth and absolutely delicious. It was served with white quinoa and a black olive emulsion, the latter I thought overpowered the octopus and a tomato version would have been better. This was my only criticism of the entire meal though. For the main course I had braised lamb with black quinoa which was excellent and served with a delicious sauce. I could easily have had a second one. My husband had the confit suckling pig with lentils which was equally an extremely tasty dish and one which I would have next time. We could not resist trying the desserts. My chocolate pave-style dessert with mango granita was superb and my husband loved his quinoa pudding which came with a strange but amazing blue corn jelly. The wine was very nice and well priced. I tried a pisco with chilies cocktail which was interesting but a little too spicy for me. Definitely a great addition to an area that is full of excellent restaurants.

Oliver's Fish & Chips

Handy local fish and chip bar with tables for an eat-in option. The fish is average and not as good as 'Nautilus' in West Hampstead. However the desserts are heavenly and it is a nice bright colourful restaurant with a great buzz.

Galvin Cafe a Vin

Consistently good food and wine. Obviously it's much smaller and more cramped than La Chapelle but cheaper. The menu is a bit limited though and not shown on the website so disappointing if you go there expecting some of their better dishes. On my last visit, I had a papardelle starter which was very dry but the rest of my meal was delicious.

The Balcon

This was my favourite pre-theatre restaurant when it was a Roux restaurant with impeccable service and excellent food. Therefore I was so disappointed to go there after reading such good reviews to find that the service was haphazard and the food extremely bland ('canteen food' declared my hubby). The food was so obviously pre-prepared for the pre-theatre mass and tasteless. Take my advice and eat elsewhere. London is full of decent restaurants.

Galvin Bistrot de Luxe

I'm glad to report that Galvin Bistro de Luxe is back on form after a poor year. It is hard to find such excellent food, friendly service and great ambience as a complete package in other London restaurants.

L'Absinthe

Nice atmosphere but shame about the food, invariably overcooked and a poor imitation of French cooking. Perhaps it is the lack of good restaurants in Primrose Hill that means L'Absinthe and Lemonia can be full every night serving mediocre food. At least a good meal can be guaranteed at Odette's.

Lanka

Fantastic local cafe with cakes to rival any French patisserie, excellent teas from Sri Lanka and Monmouth coffee. The 'light' meals are exceptionally prepared using fresh ingredients, are wonderfully presented and are always delicious. It is small but always worth waiting for a table. Hopefully the chef will fine bigger premises soon!

Pollen Street Social

I couldn't wait to try Jason Atherton's latest venture so went along last Saturday night for dinner. Jason himself was not in the kitchen that night. Having reviewed the menu before my visit, I expected a fine dining restaurant and was disappointed that it was more casual with tables barely covered with cheap linen, a noisy uncomfortable ambience and staff rushing around. The receptionists were dressed as though they worked in a tropical bar again which was again contradictory to the menu. The food was excellent, more because of the 'bits on the side' rather than because of the main ingredient although the halibut and paella was a fantastic, robust dish. I was disappointed by the 'chocolate table' which was basically 6 different chocolates supposedly from Milan but which were very average and not a patch on what I have received as petit fours with coffee in many other restaurants. It seems a bit silly to have this as a separate item on the menu when it does not deliver the 'wow' factor. Jason should check out the bonbon trolley at Marcus Wareing's Berkeley which is amazing. All in all not a great experience, with cold air-con, poor quality wine and therefore I will not be rushing back.

Mehek

My work colleagues and I had lunch here as we all like Indian food and are always keen to try somewhere new. The food was all very strange and unlike anything I've had in any Indian restaurant, and believe me I've tried loads from traditional to modern, in this country and in India. The curries were either very bland or too spicy and the chicken shashlick and vegetables had a horrible taste. The service was fine, the place itself was clean and modern but I could not recommend the food.

Interesting and well-sourced food with some exceptional dishes. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful and it is a comfortable environment for an excellent local meal. It is better in the evening as Sunday lunch can be a bit hit and miss!

When I review this restaurant previously I thought the food was average but loved the restaurant for the fantastic service and wonderful conservatory. Hovever, on a recent visit I found that the food was much improved and could not be faulted and therefore is now the perfect venue for a special night out.

Afternoon Tea @ The Ritz

I treated my husband to afternoon tea at the Ritz for his birthday. The sandwiches were very tasted although very simple, the scones were excellent but the pastries were just okay. The menu had mentioned the Ritz chocolate cake which I assume was the thin sliver amongst the pastries so a bit disappointing. The waiters offer refills of sandwiches and pastries which was nice although they were not open to requests for specific sandwiches but appeared to be going though the motions of providing another selection. The room and harpist were very nice but I think the service, although professional, could have been warmer and more personal. Afternoon tea at the Wolseley, at half the price, is much better value.

Dehesa

Excellent tapas and very friendly service. I love the courgette flowers but they are very expensive for 2 pieces! I would definitely recommend the beetroot carpaccio which was delicious. The wines are quite expensive. Our bill for 2 people with wine, 5 tapas, bread and 2 coffees came to £82 which was expensive for a 'light' and casual meal!

Murano

Having read such great reviews, I chose to celebrate my birthday in Murano this year instead of my usual splurge at Marcus Wareing's. The starters and main courses were very good , well balanced but without th extra wow factor you would expect at £60 per person. The desserts were a major disappointment being either too sweet or just wrong, for exampled salted almond ice-cream was absolutely horrible! The chocolates that came with the coffee were also with sickly sweet or just not very nice. I never thought it was possible not to enjoy a dessert or chocolates.

My other gripe was that all the wines by the glass were served as 125ml - fine for champagne but absolutely ridiculous (and well over-priced) for red and white wine.

Therefore mixed reviews and hard to recommend for a night out. Sorry, Marcus, should have gone back to your wonderful restaurant.

York & Albany

My last two visits to the York & Albany were thoroughly enjoyable. The maître d' was very welcoming and friendly on both occasions and she made us feel totally at ease. The waitress (short blonde hair and glasses) is the best I've come across in terms of efficiency, helpfulness and general attitude. Such a delight after the cold snooty French waiters you normally get in the Ramsay restaurants.

The food was very good and the Sunday lunch and early supper menus are fantastic value.

Last time we sat downstairs in front of the kitchen which was great - very comfortable and entertaining. I would definitely recommend the York & Albany and am very happy to have such a good local restaurant.

The bar needs better lighting and better staff though and the bar snacks should be free considering the price of the drinks.

Oslo Court

I visited for a family outing not quite sure what to expect. Yes it is old fashioned as I expected and the service was generally very good. The food portions were large but could not hide the fact that it was all very bland and tasteless. The dessert waiter obviously thinks he's an actor but couldn't actually make it clear what was on offer. The celebratory cake was a very nice touch .

I cannot believe that so many people are happy to spend £40 for such bad food when they could go to far better restaurants in London for the same price.

Odette's

Odette's is a great local restaurant. The food is probably the best in the area but slightly overpriced for a neighbourhood restaurant. I admire Bryn's cooking and am always happy to support him. The main problem with this restaurant is the service which is always terrible. Why can't they find some decent staff??

Curry Paradise

I have eaten here several times and the food is generally very good. On my last visit recently the service was terrible. The waiter, an oldish man, leaned across me whilst I was eating my starter to place a knife next to my place and then asked me if I was finished when it was clear that I was still eating. They then proceeded to serve the main course even though there was no room on the table and we were not ready.

My other issue with this restaurant is that it is very popular with families with very young children who tend to be quite noisy.

Cafe des Amis

A great venue for dinner before the opera. The pre-theatre menu is excellent value and the food and service are good. I do not think I'd pay for the full price menu as it is poor value compared with Galvin Bistrot and L'Autre Pied which are much better for the same price.

Lemonia

I've always though the food at Lemonia was very average but enjoyed going there for the great service and ambiance. I took my family there recently for dinner as it has always been excellent for groups but on this occasion, the service was rushed and unfriendly and the food was very sloppy. What a disappointing night for my family. I will not be going back - a shame because it is one of my local restaurants.

Launceston Place

I couldn't wait to try this restaurant having read the amazing reviews here and having seen Tristan Welch on the Great British Menu, What a disappointment. The so called 'warm service' must have had a night off. My scallops starter was very good except it was covered in herbs which slightly took from the taste of the scallops. None of the main courses took my fancy so I chose the fish pie with major misgivings as I always assume this is put on the menu to use up the previous day's leftover fish. However, it's not something you expect to see in a good restaurant so I thought I'd give it a try. It was practically a dish of potato with spinanch underneath and the faintest flavour of a fish sauce. Perhaps the chef had forgotten to add the fish layer???

My dessert wasn't much better - one of the poorest cheesecakes I've ever tasted. Then to cap it off, we were asked to sit in the 'lounge' for our coffee which meant sitting in uncomfortable chairs in reception next to a noisy group of people waiting for their table.

Al in all a very disappointing night. I find it hard to believe that Tristan was head chef at Petrus - one of my favourite restaurants.

York & Albany

I booked a table for Sunday lunch a month ago and was told it would be £15 per head which was surprising very cheap for a 3 course meal. However, when we turned up yesterday it was actually £21 - quite a rise in a month!

My husband and I both had the pappardelle with braised rabbit which was just ok - pretty lukewarm and swimming in a pool of liquid. One of my other guests had a miserable looking onion tart but the fourth person had a ham hock terrine which was excellent. We were all pleased with our main courses; roast beef, roast pork, sea bass and chick with lentils although they were a bit on the small side. The desserts were wonderful especially the treacle pudding which was the best I've ever tasted. All in all a very good meal for £21.

Unfortunately, our table had a sofa/banquette on one side which was very low with no support and extemely uncomfortable for sitting at a table. Don't these designers ever try to eat whilst sitting on one of these?? This along with the poor service ruined the lunch for me and I would be reluctant to return.

Vic Naylor's

I met a friend for dinner here last week. It's a lovely warm and inviting restaurant. My starter of smoked duck was just ok, but my main course of a pork copy with honeyed parsnips was excellent. My frind enjoyed both her starter and main course. Desserts were small but very nice. My main complaint was the service which was dreadful. Our main course arrived about an hour later than our starters which is completely unacceptable and a casual apology from our waitress was not enough. The food was also over-priced. I won't be going back.
