Petrus

I would echo all the points below - this really is a simply wonderful restaurant; truly world class.

One little soupcon - I was there recently having lunch near a couple with a young baby. Many up market restaurants would have been snooty and awkward. Not Petrus. Rather, the fortunate infant spent most of the meal being carried around and fussed over by the staff - much to everyone's obvious enjoyment.

They really do everything not just well but with true excellence

St John

I can see why this place evokes some strong reactions. The cooking is highly distinctive and original - some of the dishes work, others are simply unpalatable, but they are never boring.

Unfortunately the experience is completely let down by the simply dreadful service. The staff must be some of the most arrogant in London and exhibit no customer service ethic at all. Also, it really does take hours to get through a meal - an hour minimum per course if you're fortunate enough to attract a waiter's attention and he can be bothered to serve you. This is just too long and the situation is made even worse by the uncomfortable chairs and cramped tables. Yes, it all adds to atmosphere, but it's literally a pain.

All in all, there's just too high a risk of being massively irritated to make this place worth recommending.
