Anchor & Hope

Tried to get a table for the second time in six months. Arrived at 6pm on a Monday evening, restaurant empty. Sneered at when asking if I could have a table. Directed to the bar. Sneered at again ("David will deal with you"). Waited 5 mins. Asked if I could speak to David. Ignored. Waited another 5 mins, asked again, sneered at again. Gave up.

Ate at the Young Vic next door instead. Food there is nothing special, but at least they deign to bring you some dinner, rather than talking to their customers as if they're some kind of annoyance. I have rarely encountered such rudeness, after 30-something years in London...

Applebee's

Food is always outstanding, service always professional and discreet. The design of the space itself isn't completely successful (it isn't especially comfortable or glamorous) - but I go there all the time for the quality and reliability of the food. Highly recommended. Prices look high on the menu but they don't add in all the usual hidden extras so the bill is always reasonable.

Great Queen Street

Always fabulous British food. Tables are a little small/cramped and it's quite noisy, but the menu is always fresh and different and reliable.

Benugo Bar & Kitchen

Booked a table with over an hour to spare before our film started. On arriving, it was half-empty, yet we were told the kitchen was so busy we wouldn't be able to eat before our movie. The maitre'd (young and clearly inexperienced) couldn't see her way to any kind of an apology. Very bizarre customer service! Left immediately and went to the riverside cafe instead which was OK. This place really lets the BFI down - it's now a great venue since the re-furb and its a shame the restaurant isn't up to scratch.
