del Parc

I have to agree with the previous reviewers. This is a quirky place in that the chef is doing his thing in the middle of the restaurant, but that is good fun - if conversation runs out you can always watch his culinary ballet as he chops, mixes, fries and assembles the food. I came with five people, and so we had just about everything on the menu. For me the best things were one of the starters, a puree of broad beans and mint, and lentil dish called Zeytingyagli Havuc, but the calamari and the morrocan lamb meatballs were right up there. I wouldn't have the baked mushroom with Picos de Europa cheese - just too rich, but that was the one exception. Really good value for money, and a nice exception to the generally uninteresting restaurant offerings in North London.

Red N Hot (Euston)

We were a group of seven, and we had a memorable feast after going to a art show opening at the gallery downstairs. I don't know the names of anything we ate because we had two Mandarin speakers in our party who did the ordering, but I remember especially that there was some splendid seafood among the dishes that arrived, and a lovely aubergine stew. Very friendly staff, and the owner came by to explain things and make recommendations in both languages.

I'll be back with a less knowledgeable group soon, and see how we get on (maybe explore the less spicey zones of the menu - be careful of the chillies!), but I'm very pleased to know about this place.

Archgate Cafe

Nice food, nice people, better than fair prices. We shared a nice calamari starter (grilled calamari, very fresh, in a robust tomato sauce) and had lamb with aubergine and the Anatolian Special respectively. Lamb was perfect, succulent and set off nicely by the aubergine and roast pepper garnish. Anatolian Special was kofte lamb in a wrap, cut into attractive rounds. Nice looking and tasting, but the pita wrap made it too heavy - no problem, just unwrap it and push pita to the side.

No room for dessert, but we intend to be back.

One quibble: it's a long narrow couple of rooms, and one person smoking can make the air kind of unpleasant... Roll on the ban on restaurant smoking this summer!
