Bank Westminster

A simply fantastic restaurant.

We went here for Valentine's day this year, and, as is our custom, turned up half an hour late (this time without calling in advance). On arrival, the receptionist did not bat an eyelid, and we were at our table within a minute or two - when you're late as often as we are, it's always nice to be treated like that!

Waiting staff were fantastic - polite, friendly, and incredibly well informed about the food on offer, they answered all my questions (there were a few), and seemed to know the menu inside out. Exceptional.

The menu here is fascinating - a mixture of European classics, and pan-asian dishes is often a recipe for disaster, the sort of thing normally only attempted in low-end pubs, but rest assured, we tried food from both camps for our meal here, and both types of cuisine were exceptional.

We had Thai Beef Salad and Grilled Asparagus to start, both of which were simply divine - the beef was very tender, the salad was interesting and well mixed, with a delightful dressing. The asparagus too was tender without being soft or chewy.

Main courses were the grilled Malay chicken with sweet potato, and a grilled tuna steak with mediterranean vegeatables. As someone who normally finds chicken dishes a little too bland, I can confidently say that this dish was, by far, the best chicken breast I've ever had - the sauce and marinade was delightful, and it was cooked to absolute perfection, juicy and tender. The Tuna steak too had taken on the flavours of the veg it was cooked in - fantastic!

I had a dessert, a Valrhona chocolate tart with tangerine sorbet, and I can only say that it was the most rich thing I've ever eaten - incredibly tasty, but pretty hard to keep down!

All in all came to about £80 (no wine), which felt like a more than reaonable price given the quality of the food and service. And, to cap it all, they gave us vouchers worth £40 to spend next time we visit - as if there's any doubt we'll be going back!
