Asmara
This is one of my all time favourite restaurants! It's a delightfully kitsch, homely little place that always smells wonderfully of coffee and spices, and the service is polite, friendly and understated. The food is wonderful - a great selection for both vegetarians and meat eaters. It's always served hot, beautifully spiced and consistently excellent. Always go for the bread dishes where you eat off a communal tray using enjeera bread and your fingers.
I really can't praise this place enough.

The Shad
We had an utterly horrendous experience here. The menu was run of the mill and uninspired, the food mediocre and cold, and the service patchy - we had to ask 3 times for water.
Worst of all, however, was their attitude when we tried to use one of the 'taste' cards which, according to the website, should have got us 2 for 1 at this restaurant. We said that we would like to use the card at the time of booking, and when we turned up. However, when the bill came not nearly enough had been deducted. When we informed the waiter we were told that the discount was only valid on a specific combination of dishes. As no-one had mentioned this to us and it was not written down anywhere we asked if we could have the discount as specified on the website. The staff were unbelievably rude, flatly refused and even made us go to the bar to look at the website - which only confirmed what we had said in the first place. There followed a long and embarrassing argument where the head waiter or manager was extremely rude to us. He eventually agreed to take a little bit more off, but the whole experience was completely dire.
