I can't quite follow the tone of these new reviews that suddenly say something very different to what is well understood locally.

occasionally we all have to settle for meals at Harrisons, and to be fair it is marginally improved. The menu is simple, and they have tried to freshen it up somewhat but it is still fairly unambitious diner type fare.

the service remains the worst in Balham, and the only thing less likely than getting the bill in a timely fashion is being served hot food.

that said, it is a pretty decent bar for a drink.

La Pampa Grill (Battersea)

Steak good.

everything else, bad.

just about sums it up. the steak is very good, but the wine is overpriced, the starters poor quality, sides very overpriced and clumsy, service ramshackle.

BUT... if you want steak, go, order steak (nothing else), leave. anything else, and you only have yourself to blame!

yet another magnificent meal.

very italian, a real sense of place. The overriding feeling is always one of very good eating. no fuss, no pretension, and in it's own way very glamorous.

the place is always full, packed with affluent and stylish italians, and the room has a real 'buzz'.

The pasta is the best in town, maybe zafferano edges ahead, maybe not.

then again, I'm not half italian - though my italian friends who often dine here with me agree - superb!

Chez Bruce

about my 10th trip here.

prices creeping up, room seems ever more sterile, and staff is increasing in it's aloofness.

has success made them complacent and smug?

harder and harder to find the joy and joie de vie of it's early life.

just not fun anymore

Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor Restaurant

the new cuisine at the fifth floor is lighter, more complex, with a confidence that reflects great skill in the kitchen.

highlights include:

fantastic scallop carpaccio with lemon dressing and caper was stunning. a light creamy texture to the scallop accented with clear flavours and a salty, aromatic complexity in the background.

magnificent pyrenees pork, with a light jus reduction; perfectly cooked, soft and melting, whilst the saucing was well judged. the truffle mash was powerful, and rich - strong, clear truffle flavours abound.

desserts not quite so thrilling, but the assurance of the former dishes more than makes up.

wine list is superb, service effusive without being overbearing, shame about the room though.

easily michelin star quality.

Cracking Italian.

not modern, but classic, with the best ingredients, hearty service, and big on style.

not cheap, but not less than brilliant either.

If you like your neighbourly trattoria, it is the same stuff here - only much, much better.

recommend the veal chop on the bone, or any of the pasta's
