Bar Battu
Went there on the evening of the 21st of March for first and only time.
I had booked this 3/52 previously for just, myself. When I arrived, I was shown to a table for 4. Nobody deigned to clear the 3 other table settings. People without bookings, who walked in, were shown to the best tables for 2.
I waited for 30 mins and nobody bothered to ask me for a drink (this place is supposed to specialise in biodynamic wines). Others who arrived long after me had their drinks order taken. I left without ordering food. If you do not fit a City archetype, either discussing business or commencing an affair, do not expect any service-the Waiters clearly can't get their head around someone of a different ilk.

Vinoteca (Farringdon)
On the 21st of Jan, having attended a course in London, decided to stay out longer and eat by myself. I had wanted to eat here for a long time due it’s high rating in the Good Food Guide and the suggestion it would be informal, no bookings and therefore comfortable for a diner by himself. How wrong can you be!
I clearly appeared out of place beside the boisterous city gals and guys. On asking for something to eat I was told by the man with the flip chart I would have to wait 45 mins for a table or could eat at the bar immediately. I expect to wait in a no bookings room but thought I might as well eat straight away. I was given a menu and pulled up the only available stool at the juncture of maximum staff and customer traffic.
One hour later without being served and having endured disdainful avoidant glances from bar staff whenever I sought attention and been buffeted continuously, I called the bill for the glass of house white I’d ordered.
In the interim walk-ins after me were seated and treated like long lost friends. I was (of course) served with the bill for a more expensive wine. I pointed this out and (of course) the next bill proffered was for the same amount.
The man with the flip chart had the arrogance to blame me when I complained, citing the fact that I “hadn’t held on the menu”-customers at the bar had used it to consult.
Clearly you should only come here if (a) you look the part, (b) are not alone, (c) are not under the assumption that the man with the flip chart will deliver what he is proposing and accept responsibility for serving the customer and (d) you hold on to your menu for dear life as this apparently signifies to the bar staff you want food,. Although half an hour with my menu did not seem to confer any advantage, it may stop the man with the flip chart blaming you for lack of service.
