Chez Bruce

My wife took me here for my birthday last week and I have to say I was very much looking forward to it. It has been at least 4 years since we were last here so I was keen to see whether it lived up to the hype generated by it in that time.

We were sat at a table upstairs which was fine - my only comment on that would be that it is a little small and quiet, and so if you have a loud table next to you (we did), it's a bit hard to be intimate.

The food was very very good, but we ate at the Glasshouse in Kew a couple of weeks before and I have to say that I though the food there was better. The bread in particular was not up to standard. I also am not very keen on the whole "set menu supplements" issue - both my start and the cheese I had incurred a supplement (no idea why a starter of poached egg, asparagus and ham should generate a supplement but it did). Either it is a set menu ... or it is a la carte. Paying extra is just irritating

The service was good, but basically only 1 waiter for the whole upstairs room. No sommelier in sight (not an issue for me but could be for some people). As a result, service was just a tiny bit slow - wine glasses left empty for 5 minutes, plates not cleared etc. Wine list as expensive as all restaurants in this class, so no surprises there.

This may sound like nit-picking, but at £250 for dinner for 2, you probably expect slightly more. To sum up, very good, but I think they need to slightly sharpen up if they want to stay on top of the competition.

Enoteca Turi

This has been my favourite Italian restaurant in London. Ate here again last Saturday (first time since last summer) and was disappointed: food was not up to usual standards and the service was poor. Noticed also that the wine list seems to have got even more expensive (perhaps it was always that way!).

The Glasshouse

Ate here for the first time in 3 years last night. Food was truly excellent and, contrary to other reviews, I thought the winelist was very comprehensive and not badly priced at all (restaurants offering a similar quality of food often have much more expensive wine lists). Service was OK - could probably have been a little friendlier but not an issue. Will definitely come back
