My husband and I dined at Roast back in March on a Saturday evening. I waited some time before writing this review to make sure that I still felt as strongly about what I had to say as I did the night of the meal, and I do.
I had read previous reviews on the site that the service at Roast was lacking, however we thought we would give the restaurant a try as the menu looked good and it was convenient with its Borough Market location. We had hoped to find a quality restaurant so close to home unfortunately Roast was not it.
The meal got off to the wrong foot since we had to wait 20 minutes to be attended to upon arrival. A couple walked in off the street in front of us and were seated at a nice spacious table in the main section of the restaurant. Whilst we had a reservation and were seated next to the waiters stand to the side of the restaurant which proved to be noisy, a main walkway with waiters retrieving bottled water from the stand and quite possibly the most un-romantic seat in the whole place.
Despite my bad first impressions I thought I would let the food speak for itself so we ordered the Tasting Menu including the tasting wines to accompany each meal, well at least that is what should have happened. For each course we received our wine after we had finished the course! It completely ruined the flow and tastes of the menu to have your glass of red wine that should have accompanied the venison from the course before, arrive in the middle of your fish course. I had actually finished my cheeses in the last course by the time my glass of port arrived.
The whole evening was so bad that it was almost funny apart from the fact that the bill came to £180 for 2 people. I don't mind paying close to two hundred pounds if the food, service and wine are of the appropriate standard however in this case they were not. I doubt we will ever dine there again.
