Alexander's Restaurant

I visited the brasserie at Alexander House last weekend with my boyfriend and his family. We were shown to the bar and waited for twenty minutes for our drinks to arrive. When they did come my boyfriends beer was flat and had to be returned.

After finally being shown through to our table we chose our starters and mains from a varied menu. The starters were generally good. We had Chicken Parfait, Smoked Salmon and Scallops.

The main courses were a mixed bag. My Vegitarian Gourmand was a nice selection and was of decent size. My boyfriends Steak and Kidney pie was far from impressive, it really did look like a reheated ready meal and he had difficulty cutting it let alone eating it. The other three diners in our party seemed to be happy with the quality of their meals but the portions were on the small side.

The desserts were satisfactory but nothing amazing.

It was really the service that lets this place down. I had cutlery and food dropped on my lap by the waitress and the bill, which arrived after a very long wait, included £20 of cocktails which belonged to another table. I saw two other tables send back meals and the general atmophere was too quiet and tense for a Saturday night.

Little Bay (Farringdon)

I have visited Little Bay in West Hampstead previously and was not disappointed by their Farringdon restaurant. The interior is not great and could do with some attention but this is more than made up for by the fabulous food. For £30 my boyfriend and I managed to have a three course meal each. We both started with the flat mushrooms with spinach and blue cheese which was just right in quantity and flavour. I opted for the Salmon with Coconut Potatoes for the main course which was amazing, the flavourings were subtle and perfect. My boyfriend opted for the Steak which he thoroughly enjoyed. We both had the Warm Chocolate Fondant for dessert which took quite a while to appear but was worth the wait.

All in all, Little Bay is a great value for money restaurant serving high quality food. It's just a shame they're not in slightly more scenic surroundings!
