The Stonhouse

I'd read the negative reviews online for The Stonhouse, but a 'friend of a friend' recommended this, and as it's just round the corner from where I live I thought I'd give it a go.

First impressions were very good... Nicely decorated - light and airy, pretty busy, which is always a good sign, and friendly bar staff. Looking through the menu there were actually a lot of things my boyfriend and I could have ordered, but we settled on the salt and pepper squid starter to share, then I opted for the crab and chilli linguine for a main (requesting a lot of extra chilli as I like things very hot), and my boyfriend went for the fish and chips.

After not too long a wait, the squid starter arrived which was really delicious and was wolfed down quickly. Unfortunately, from this point onwards things went downhill. The jug of tap water we had ordered when we first ordered our drinks still hadn't arrived and it didn't until we had requested it from 3 different waiters. This probably wouldn't have been so much of a concern if we'd had some food to eat on, but in actual fact it took 50 minutes from finishing the starter until the main arrived. After about 30 minutes of waiting we started to ask how much longer it would be. We were told it was just on it's way. In our 50 minute wait we were not offered any more drinks, no one came and asked if we would like any bread to keep us going (until 5 minutes before the food arrived), and at no point did any of the waiters come over to apologise for the wait. The waiting staff themselves were all very abrupt and I don't think we were smiled at once.

When the food finally arrived, with no apology in sight, I'm afraid to say it was not worth the wait. My chilli and crab linguine was extremely dry and the pasta itself ws overcooked. There was also no taste of chilli, despite me requesting extra. I asked for a small dish of chilli to be brought to me so that I could add it myself, and received back what looked like a spoonful of lazy chilli out a jar. My boyfriends chips were pretty tasty (although he thought they were overdone), but the fish was a let down. The batter was extremely greasy and the fish inside was not particularly fresh tasting.

I really wanted to like this place because it's a great location and has a nice feel inside, but unfortunately it doesn't hit the mark at all. To be honest, I probably could have looked past the slightly mediocre food, because there were lots of other things I would have liked to try on the menu, but the service in here was so bad that I definitely would not go back again.

The Ebury

I took my mum for lunch here last month and we had a really lovely meal. The staff were friendly and attentive, the setting was stylish and the food delicious.

We both started with a salad - mum The Ebury, me the bacon & avo. They were both very fresh and the perfect size for a starter. For the main I had the tuna, which was cooked perfectly and mum had the lamb which was also wonderful, although a little pink for her liking. The portions were really good sizes and we were both completely full at the end of the meal.

The only downside to the whole meal was that the restaurant was really quite empty, which is a shame considering what a nice place this is. However, this really didn't spoil the experience and I've booked to go back again this Saturday.

I went here a couple weeks ago for a girl friend's birthdays. After reading the recent bad reviews I was a little apprehensive, but I have to say that our group had a really wonderful experience there.

Our waiter was extremely friendly and helpful and the food was served in excellent time. The menu itself isn't extensive, but everything sounded good and there was definitely something there for everyone. I'd heard that the portions were small so we all ordered starters as well mains. In actual fact, the portions are larger than they look - we all got the main with a rice pot, dhal and bread and to be honest we wouldn't have needed the starters. Saying that though I'm glad we did because they were delicious. I had squid to start followed by a fish curry and both were really delicious.

We'd booked the table online, which I think gave us 50% off, or 2-4-1, either way, the total bill was really reasonable - starter, main course with rice, dahl and bread and half a bottle of wine each came to £20 a head!

I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and in actual fact am off there again tonight!

The Olive Tree

Popped in for lunch on Saturday as my friend lives just down the road and was really impressed.

I ordered the goats cheese and avocado salad which was really good - it was in the most beautiful honey dressing and was the perfect size. My friend had the burger, which again was really good, obviously home-made and very tasty.

The waiter that served us was very friendly and I really liked the decor of the place. Only problem was that the place was completely empty apart from us - a real shame as this place is definitely worth a visit.
