The Adam & Eve

I have been following The Adam & Eve on twitter for a couple of years now, from before their re-opening, yet had never managed to go there (despite living about a mile away).

How have I waited this long? Immediately, I love the place. They have a small, but decent, selection of real ales, they have a well-selected wine list, they have a splendid selection of spirits, and they even offer a few cocktails.

On a Saturday night, I was initially surprised not to find the place heaving, but then realised that most people were sitting down for food, the table turnover wasn't very fast (which is a good sign) and the attention from the staff is superb (not that I doubt they could cope with it being much busier, I am certain they could). There was even a party going on in the function room upstairs, but this did not detract from the slick running of the pub, nor did it disturb those of us downstairs.

After a few drinks, the two of us had a burger each, which was cooked how we requested it, served with some delicious chips and a perfect little side-salad. Other meals that we saw wandering past all looked superb as well.

I will be going back, and soon.

Cinnamon Cay

I booked Cinammon Cay online through London Eating, having tried another restaurant, only to discover they had a one month waiting list! My initial feelings were that it was noisy, but we were next to an enormous xmas party, and when they cleared out, it was just fine. The service was attentive, helpful and knowledgeable. If they didn't know something, they went & found out. The atmosphere was delightful, the open-plan kitchen was just over my shoulder, but I hardly knew it was there, and the food was not hurried, but by no means slow, and the cuisine was exciting and delightful. My mussels, octopus & chorizo salad was heavenly, and a host of other dishes including springbok passed our way. Everything was piping hot and nothing went to waste. I will be going back, and I will be trying even more dishes! Highly recommended, just remember it's a 12-15 minute walk from Clapham Jn.

S&M Cafe (Islington)

I've eaten in the S&M Cafe twice now, and both times, I have been overjoyed. Breakfast the first time round (which is served all day) was absolutely supreme, hand-cut bacon of outstanding quality, black pudding better than anything I've ever bought from a butchers', and a sterling cup of tea alongside. The next time I had proper sausages and mash, and they went down an absolute treat. The service is always friendly and the waitresses are adorable, the decor is lovely and old-fashioned, the music is quiet enough to hear yourself think and is a lovely 50s/60s/70s soundtrack for your meal. I will be going back time and time again.

Giraffe (Royal Festival Hall)

My girlfriend brought me here for my birthday, having spent a boozy day laying in the park! We continued the theme by ordering two of their famous cocktails. Their gin berry sling was absolutely phenomenal and had me feeling quite merry after every mouthful! This was followed by a lovely mezze-style plate of starters that we could not fault, and big portions of enchillades for her, with a *perfect* rib eye steak for me, cooked blue, just how I like it. The service was excellent, not too fussy, but really friendly and ever so cheerful. We'll go back again, but be prepared to queue outside, since it is VERY popular. Well worth the wait though - you'll only be out there for 10 minutes or so.

La Porchetta (Holborn)

I've been coming to this little Italian for some years now. You could list it under Romantic, you could list it under Good Value, you could list it under pre-theatre, there are all sorts of things this restaurant is. But above all, it's extremely good value for what you get, the staff are wonderful, and some of the alcoves downstairs are wonderful for some sneaky kisses with your loved one between courses. The Gnocchi are prepared with love & care, and melt in the mouth. The pizzas are enormous and are VERY well made. The starters are almost a main course unto themselves! The wine list is inexpensive, and whilst not the longest, is by no means meagre. It is very well-chosen, however. I have been with friends, lovers, and colleagues, and all have been impressed. I will never stop coming back to this restaurant. Please don't hesitate. And if it's your birthday, be prepared for a raucous cake delivery, accompanied by much banging of pots & pans! :-)
