Marcus Wareing's Banquette

I went with my parents for a pre-theatre dinner at Banquette and was really impressed. The service was great, the food was lovely and the atmosphere was perfect. The £18 for 3 courses/£25 for 2 courses pre-theatre menu as fantastic value with good size portions well presented. The wine does put the final bill price up but I would definitely recommended this restaurant.

Fire & Stone

I went to Fire & Stone this week with a group of old schoolfriends. The atmosphere was perfect, with just enough background noise to cover our enthusiastic catching up, but without being overly loud. The food itself was fine, not amazing. The pizzas varied greatly in quality, but most people were fairly satisified. The house white, as a warning, was awful!

Unfortunately, the service left an even more bitter taste than the wine. The lady serving us was surly throughout and we had to go above her to a manager to sort out a problem we had regarding the deal we were dining on (she seemed adamant that half a bottle each for five people was 2 bottles). Having not appreciated this we were somewhat reluctant to leave the full 'optional' 12.5% service tip, but decided that we would anyway. However, as we were leaving, she stopped us to ask for the last 40p that we hadn't left! This was embarassing and entirely unncessary.

On the whole I would recommend Fire & Stone as a place with enough atmosphere to make up for its shortfallings. I just hope you get a different waitress!
