Fish in a Tie

Came here for Sunday lunch with several friends. We chose the set menu rather than the Sunday roast, and this was clearly a good choice. Good sardines and other starters and mains were fine. Really nicely cooked duck leg, chicken milanese good and the risotto was very good.

For the price this is amazing, I dont know how they do it. It is reliable, well cooked food, not incredible, but very nice. You leave with full stomachs, knowing that you've had a good meal for a fantastic price. The ambiance is lovely, the music is not obtrusive. Lovely place to eat and chat in comfort.

If Gordon Ramsay is Harrod's, then Fish in a tie is Marks and Spencer.

Definitely returning, the lunch menu is brilliant value.

Pavement Cafe

Went to the Pavement Cafe Bistro on a Friday night. The place was quiet to start but soon filled up. The staff were charming and did a lot to make us comfortable. Water was brought with a wedge of lemon, complementary bread and oil/balsamic, and a refill was offered without prompting. The staff happily offered to keep our wine chilled for us in the fridge, and an ice bucket appeared without requesting it.

Starters: goats cheese flan - lovely, aparagus - perfectly cooked, fish strips, perfect and the smoked salmon was just right.

Mains: duck breast cooked to perfection, as was the tuna steak. Lasgne was fine, and the breast of chicken was nice, if a little dry.

Puddings: Bread and butter pudding was a great success as was my chocolate pudding thing.

All in all a lovely meal with lovely waiting staff who were happy to allow us to relax.

Bill for 4 (mains and starters for all, puddings for 3) came to £90. Well worth it. Will visit again soon

Gazette (Balham)

We visited this place on a weekday night. I have read some good reviews and people I know have raved about it. I have to say that it was all decidedly ordinary. The steaks were done well, but I expect that from a French restaurant. The snails were ok, a bit chewy and the sauce was, well, ok. The mussels were ok, but the sauce was ordinary. Nothing spectacular. I think for the price I expected better.

All in all it was - you know - ok.

Canton Arms

I was really disappointed to read the 2 reviews for the Canto that were negative, so I decided to go again to check.

We went on a Tuesday night and were sat at the bar end of the restaurant as there were two of us.

We had the charcuterie plate to share, then the beef pie. The service was efficient and pleasant, and any requests we made were dealt with quickly. The place was clean (didn't go to the loos).

This with two glasses of house white and a pint of beer came to £47.

The food was, as I have previously experienced, fantastic. The pastry on the pie was better than I could ever make, and the home made pates etc were excellent.

Very busy even on a weekday night so try to get there early.

Perhaps the two bad reviews were blips - my experiences at the Canton have always been terrific.

Canton Arms

I'm going to regret this but...

I have been to the Canton several times now and the food has always been amazing. Really innovative menus based on foods in season and beautifully cooked. Charming staff eager to please, the only problem is that it gets too busy and there's no system for booking for parties less than 8.

I sort of see the point. They want to encourage locals and with a booking system they would end up like the really popular west end joints that are booked up months in advance.

Try the Canton during the week, we managed to get a table for 2 on Thursday night. Definitely worth a visit, haven't had a disappointing meal there yet.

Well done to the owners, really fab set up.

Gastro

I am really disappointed that Monsieur Gastro hasn't heeded the feedback and done something about the appalling food and service at his establishment. There are plenty of other places in Clapham for good food and service. We need to vote with our feet!

El Rincon Latino (Clapham)

A large group of us came here for a friends birthday. What a treat! Charming staff, very efficient, and when they did make a mistake it was quickly rectified. We had tapas and paella and it was all delicious. The house wines were good too. It is very noisy and we did have to shout at each other to be heard, but the food and service made up for it. Definately not a romantic evening type place!

I've been here for Sunday brunch when it's a lot quieter. Would highly reccommend it for a lazy Sunday brunch/lunch

The Sequel

went to this restaurant on Thursday 14th June. Usually it's great but today.... Starters were nice, but the steaks were underdone. They insist that they "present the steaks medium rare" but they were raw - and my husband likes rare steaks! We sent them back ( we weren't the only ones I noticed) and they came back marginally better. The puddingw was lovely though - home made ice creams.

And on to the waiting staff. One was very attentive and sweet, but the males seem to have been paying a lot of attention to the female diners without partners! I'm not a prude, but we did end up waiting a while for attention.

Very dissapointing when this used to be such a great place.
