The Empress

What a find, how glad am I that this has opened in my local areas - stylish decor, they have gone to lengths during the refurbishment to pay attention to detail and it shows - interesting wine-list and with lovely wintery menu I was excited just reading it! - the menu was meat and game orientated so I was not too suprised when I found out the owners are the couple who run the gastropub - it's in the same genre - I went for a fish menu - arbroth smokey with a salad of mixed leaves, pan roasted salmon on a beetroot risotto with horseradish with greens - what a treat - I almost came over all Nigella like when the man course arrived - the colours of the dish, bright red and green gave such a lovely festive feel - good food, cooked very well - I've seen the comment about the 12.5% inclusive tips - it happens most places these days - granted the service felt a little inexperienced but it was clear they were trying and you got the impression that the owners or managers would certainly keep a watchful eye on them - all they need is polish - a gem in an area that the local eateries can be a little complacent - so welcome Empress of India - I for one am welcome - Our bill was around £68 - two starters, mains and three glasses of wine - ok maybe a little pricy for regular eating but I don't mind paying this for the quality they provide

Wapping Food at The Wapping Project

I have been to Wapping several times now, it's on my repeat list because the atmosphere, service and most important of all the food has been consistently good and makes for a very enjoyable meal out - Last night I visted again, the atmosphere and service was good but for the first time,I felt the food slipping into the complacent category which I hope signals a night off rather than a trend - a starter of goats cheese gnocchi was ok, for some strange reason it seems over-salty but really only 2 small pieces of gnocchi for around £6-7? the eel starter followed the same minimal proportions - the main course of duck confit was again ok-ish but the food lacked the distinctive flair that it had on past visits - the pudding of toffee sponge made up for the mediocre starters & mains - all in all ok but there are a lot of other places (The Princess, Vinoteca) who are delivering the same type of menu for the same or less cost but are cooked very very well - so come on Wapping Food - get your flair back - otherwise you will lose that edge and I'll think twice about including it on my repeat list
