After negotiating a rather bureaucratic and unhelpful booking service for Galvin (we were a party of seven), I was a little concerned that, reviews not withstanding, we would experience the same semming disregard for our business from the staff on the night.
I need not have feared. Staff were pleasant, attentive and friendly, and the food was superb - nothing fancy or particularly original, but outstanding French classics, cooked to perfection.
Amongst us, we sampled the menu pretty thoroughly. In particular I have to give a special mention to the pheasant with lentils, the confit of duck and the ham hock and fois gras terrine - and of course the superb cheeseboard. The only sampled item that didn't shine was the chocolate fondant, which was still pleasing but nothing very special.
We ordered relatively cheap wine, from a great - mainly French - list, and were very pleased with the quality for the price.
The bill came in at around fifty pounds a head, which for three courses with coffee, including wine, aperitifs and service was excellent value for money.
My only quibble - already mentioned - was the booking process - I do not appreciate having to fill out a form with my credit card details to book a restaurant table. Galvin - get this sorted out, and I would give you an unprecedented 100%.
