Spread Eagle

ALLEIGHLUYAH!!! The Spread Eagle has finally re - opened after its refurbishment. Thank goodness at last there is a truly excellent restaurant in Greenwich! I went there with my future husband on Friday - before the refurbishment it was his favourite restaurant (beating greats such as Boisdale, J Sheeky's and marginally beating Le Pont de la Tour!). Luckily we were not let down. I will admit that in my opinion the decor has lost some of its charm. I really loved what has been described as "shabby" furnishings, and I would have left it alone. However, the new interior has managed to maintain its homely feel, and it is certainly less dark and more spacious.

There are a few teething problems with the new restaurant, two in particular impacted our meal. Firstly a rather loud band started in a bar underneath the restaurant at 9:30, and the music could clearly be heard in the restaurant for us this wasn’t too much of a problem, but other dinners were clearly unhappy. Secondly some of the staff are obviously new and just need to learn a bit more about the menu (ie they couldn't explain what the cheeses were). This was not a problem, as overall the service was as usual fantastic and attentive without being intrusive.

There are no teething problems at all with the food - the same chef still prepares elegantly presented food that tastes fantastic. We had 3 courses all of which were excellent – the Beef in particular was fantastic. Without a doubt the best food you can buy in Greenwich.

Amazingly the restaurant has managed to keep prices very reasonable, with 3 courses costing £31, excellent value in my opinion! I would highly recommend The Spread Eagle. A tip would be to either give it a month or two until the teething problems have been sorted, or if like me you just can't wait, then book a table upstairs, where the music can not be heard, but the decor and atmosphere are still as charming (and the Ladies toilets are better!).
