Galvin

Buzzing atmosphere, attentive service, outstanding food, a memorable cheese board, reasonably priced. Probably the best dining experience I have had in London in the last 12 months. A delight to be repeated in the near future.

Skylon Restaurant

I’ve eaten twice at Skylon (grill) in the last month. The setting can’t be faulted – great views, nice airy, spacious dining room with bar in the middle. The food is good, not great, just good. The herring and beetroot starter (which I had both times) perks up the taste buds. I had fish for mains both times, which was perfectly cooked (cod with lentils & steamed seabream). Cinnamon rice pudding dessert is delicious. One of my fellow diners asked for the lamb with vegetable dauphinoise…..which turned out to be chips! Once pointed out, she was given some spinach. Surely this sort of thing should not be a) turned out by the kitchen b) accepted by the waiters. It’s a short menu, they should know what they’re doing.

My main problem is with the service which they really need to sort out. The waiting staff are clearly badly trained and badly managed. It’s not that they don’t have enough staff, it just seems to be a maelstrom of activity with very little in the way of results. 15 minutes to get water, aperitifs arrive afterwards, wine arrives after starters. I asked for fresh mint tea….firstly we got two cappuccinos which we sent back, then two espressos…..then finally the tea.

It’s not that far off being a really good restaurant….but having eaten at Galvin the night before, it’s in a different league at the moment.
