I have wanted to go to Arbutus all year and my 30th Birthday was the perfect event to try what is considered one of the best new restaurants in London.
We had a large group of people for dinner and the staff were very accommodating especially with a few late arrivals.
We were given plenty time to settle in, digest the great menu and order. As we were a large group we had a reduced menu from the ala carte. Starters as whole were good, Winter Vegetable Soup with proper chunky sized veg, excellent Porchetta, but the star of the course was the Raviolli stuffed with Mascepone, Parmesan, Chesnut and rosemary. The only complaint was that the bread arrived at the same time as the starters. It would have been nice to have the bread whilst perusing the menu.
The mains were good. Succulent Lamb with Sweetbreads went down well, as did the Sea Bream. The only complaint was with the Barvette of Beef, a few people found the beef tough but the accompanying Dauphinoise Pototoes more then made up for the short fall.
Service overall was good, and was attentive without being overbearing. There were a few problems, one that I only noticed after I have finished my main course was the absence of Salt and Pepper on the table. We did have to ask a couple of times for bottled water, and an unfinished bottle of Champagne was removed from the table when the wine was brought out (again something I only remembered after the meal). On the subject of wine, the list is concise and of a good range both of location and price. The cheaper end of the list did not let us down and both the Champagne, Red and White were throughly enjoyed.
All in all, Arbutus is good. I believe to give it a real review I would need to have dinner with smaller group. The cost is very good compared to some of its peers and the environment is clean and unpreteious. I hope that the management will see the long term benefit of keeping the restaurant as is and do not get tempted into raising prices to suit the 'well healed' masses who will eventually flock to this restaurant.
