Roast

On previous visits the service has been it and miss, however yesterday for a saturday lunch in a packed restaurant it was fine. Food isn't the cheapest in the world but it is borough market and and both the steak and chicken mains that arrived were great. Pity about the chips, which are always terrible.

Maxim

Also used to go with the family when I was younger and always loved it, so went this evening when back in town but looks like things have slipped in a big way.

Food was still the same high standard but the service was poor. The kind you get in a tourist trap in town. Waiter was desparate to take the first drink order but gave a look of outright disgust at also bringing a jug of tap water. Then proceed to keep topping up the glasses to overslow levels after ever sip in that way some places do to finish the bottle - however once the starters arrived the waiters seems to go out of their way to ignore the customers (not just us). Along with other tables, we had to appoach the bar area to make requests. Our various main dishes arrived over the space of 10 minutes (which to be fair would good - it just would have been nice to have them together) without any explanation or appology and when paying, like other tables we had to ask numeous times for the bill.

Nothing about the service was polite tonight.

The Laughing Gravy

Don't be fool by the outside and slightly out of the way location, this is a great place with a relaxed atmosphere and great food. My steak was melt in the mouth ....... was so tempted to kick back, order another couple of bottles and not go back to the office!

Italian Graffiti

Went with a big group for a cheap monday dinner and fitted the bill perfectly. Fireplaces made it slightly different but mainly good, inexpensive food and really good service. Had people turning up at different times, babies bottles that needed heating etc and the staff were great with all of it. Think we ended up sitting there for about 2-3 hours, with no rush even after we'd paid the bill.

Chennai Dosa (353 High St North)

Went the Wembley one. 80's purple chicken shack look and service like your local chinese but this is a real find for the food. Great authentic Indian food at a price of under £100 for the 13 of us!! Though suggest you resist the urge to order the 6 foot dosa. Looks better than it tastes - the good news is there's loads of other tasty options.

Portal Restaurant & Bar

Went last night for the first time in ages and was a little worried given all the service comments but it was great. Great food and wine (recommend the Monk fish for 2) with very friendly, attentive service.

Was a big birthday group using the great looking private room who also looked like they were having great fun. Definitely an idea to bear in mind for future birthdays/celebtrations.
