The Manor Arms

Very pleased to see Streatham get a pub done up so nicely but the food is very disappointing - which considering the price of the menu is pretty bad news. 2 meals were inedible but we weren't even asked why they were being returned untouched. I think they have dropped their prices recently - at one point a steak was over £20 - and for many meals you have to buy sides separately, which is ridiculous. On the plus side, I had a fabulous chocolate dessert. Perhaps just go for a drink.

Boqueria (Acre Lane)

Luckily although far up the hill towards Clapham, Boqueria still feels like a Brixton establishment, with it's quirky staff who were keen to please and sense that it's not just style over substance. The food and wine were really good - particularly the croquetas jamon which melted in the mouth. It was quiet on a Sunday early evening but it was only a couple of weeks open by then. It deserves to become popular.

Agile Rabbit

This has to be one of the coolest places in South London. We sat and ate fabulous thin and crispy stone baked pizza, sipped a great cocktail, watched an amazing band playing in the market arcade (booked by Agile Rabbit who seem to have bands on regularly) and to top it off, the waitress whipped off her apron and gave an electrifying perfomance of a soul classic with the band - then put her pinny back on and carried on serving. So memorable.

Etta's Seafood Kitchen

Lovely, lovely staff and a great relaxed atmosphere. It's BYO which is such a bonus. Food can be a bit mixed - there aren't proper chips unfortunately, just oven chip type things, which lets down a fish and chip meal quite a lot, but someone else in my party had a fabulous seafood curry that was extremely generous with lovely ingredients. Deserves to be popular for its friendly staff and good value meals.

Mama Lan

Just what the village needed - somewhere for quick, tasty, cheap, BYO, spicy food. The dumplings are delicious and the other dishes unusual and made with real care and love. It's fabulous to sit at the counter and watch Mama Lan herself preparing the food. The owner is lovely. Recommended.

Bellantoni's

We had a wonderful meal here. We sat inside one of the dining rooms off the market arcades and picked from a short but imaginative menu. The food was really unusual and of a very high quality. We are going to return with our Italian relatives when they are next in London. Recommended.

Elephant

Friendly staff told us how the chef had set up after cooking curries for dinner parties and having so many compliments - and it really does taste like great home cooking. The menu is really short (as the kitchen is tiny) but the food is flavoursome and very cheap. It is BYO which is always a bonus. I've been a few times now and would be great to see the menu vary a little in future.

Mantanah

The most authentic thai food I have tried in London. The owners and staff were so lovely too and the cooking seemed really exceptional. Some dishes particularly centred on their home village and were unusual - not necessarily what western tastes would expect - but well worth a try. I can't recommend it highly enough. The staff were telling me that they have been hit hard by cheaper chain restaurants nearby. What a shame - people who live near here are so lucky. I have to travel half an hour to get there but it is worth it.

Lahore Kebab House (Streatham)

Fabulous food particularly if you stick with the grilled meats and wonderful breads. The stuffed paratha was wonderful. The tikka fish was excellent too. It's a huge place and open every night so getting a table is not a problem. The staff were really friendly and the bill was ridiculously small...with the added advantage of bringing your own nice bottle of wine to accompany. Unlike Mirch Masala across the street you even get a proper wine glass (not a plastic cup) and it feels more like a restaurant than a canteen. And the food is better than mirch masala too. Wish I lived a little bit nearer...

Unfortunately had to take a table upstairs which had little atmosphere unlike the downstairs room. Food really good and well priced - and its a really quirky place. Not quite as fabulous food as say Salt Yard or Iberica in town but it is cheaper and lots of character.

Tinello

Maybe the reviews I read made me expect a little too much? Really pleasant service and a great looking room but the food was not overwhelming... Small eats were goodish but our main was nothing memorable - my cod with celariac was fairly bland. We paid extra to have some roast potatoes with onions and unfortunately they tasted very much like they had been re-heated. As a potato fan I find that pretty unforgiveable! Walnut sauce on the non-pasta pasta dish was lovely. But overall nothing very special. Probably didn't help having the table next to us so close they were almost sitting in our laps - and as it was a rich an elderly man meeting his teenage girlfriend's mother (who didn't speak a word of English) it wasn't the best situation to overhear all night....

Don't expect amazing service or to linger over a romantic meal - but do order a mixed grill and some nan and god it's good! In and out of there in an hour, BYO so adds to the value. I love it.

Mrs Wong's Chinese Restaurant

Don't expect anything fancy, but if you want some really well cooked dishes, ridiculously cheaply priced with friendly and efficient staff (and BYO on top) then this is just a great place. Some dishes are probably fairly ordinary, but if you choose well then you can get very good food. I highly recommend the salt and pepper squid. We have a fabulous 3 course meal and usually end up paying about £25 for 2 of us.

Negril

Have been three times in the last month to Negril. It's such a cool place - the food is great (although not cheap) - really tasty jerk free-range chicken and home made proper chips, with rice and peas and lovely spicy gravy. The staff, although can sometimes be a little relaxed, have been unfailingly charming and friendly. In the sun, sitting outside watching the police cars whiz up and down Brixton Hill with a glass of BYO wine - what could be nicer? Breakfasts are good too.

Village Masaleh

Unfortunately no longer a bring your own restaurant, but the food was really tasty and well priced. The mixed grill was great (especially the kebabs and prawns) although the lamb was slightly on the tough side. Lamb korai was very full flavoured with spinach. Aubergine curry was delicious and the paratha very good. It seemed freshly cooked and the service was very friendly. Planning to go back and try some different dishes.

Olley's

It has been a long time since I nearly cried in a restaurant. Our cooker was broken, we spent all day decorating, I was starving, and I was so excited at trying 'south London's best fish and chips'. Then they brought me my food and my bottom lip started wobbling and I couldn't help it. The fish looked lovely (and it was) and the mushy peas looked lovely (and they were) but the chips?! The CHIPS?! They were the kind of chips you get in a bad canteen at your work place or a rubbish pub. Not proper chippy chips - the thing I had salivated imagining all day. I even asked the waitress - surely they didn't serve these luke warm, ready processed spongey items when you ordered a bag of chips from the take away?? The answer was a proud yes we do. My boyfriend eventually told me to get a grip of myself and stop looking as though a relative had died. But we left very disappointed and won't be back.

The Hive

Hive is really cool but like Brixton - can sometimes be a bit erratic. But don't be put off. The service is usually great but sometimes a bit ditzy and slow. The downstairs bar/restaurant is great for a cocktail and has a really good atmosphere - not at all pretentious. The meals I've had there have been really tasty and good value. Great steaks, well cooked with crunchy garlic chips. Lovely pork belly and mash with a fine sauce.

Sake No Hana

With starter and main course we still left the restaurant hungry. With 40% off the food it was still expensive for the very tiny portions - and the small portions were not made up for by the flavour. I've never been to a restaurant and been told that if we buy the drinks on the lower half of the list (in this case the sake) they would 'taste horrible'. Why have 'horrible' tasting items on your list? I think they were aware we had booked to receive the 40% off the food deal, and treated us accordingly.

The Real Greek (Covent Garden)

I am so embarrassed to have taken my non-London friends here when they visited at the weekend. It would confirm everyone's worst preconceptions about London restaurants. Tiny portions, over-priced, terrible service. Our child's meal came 40 minutes before ours did. Ours came after a long wait - I wish we hadn't bothered.

The Gallery

Am I the luckiest person ever to have this great restaurant just across the road from my new house? We've been there 3 times already - and not just for the fantastic spicy and tender grilled meats but the portuguese stew and the seafood. Marvellous food, friendly staff and cheap.

Joe Allen

I can understand why people love Joe Allen for the great atmosphere but the food is truly terrible. The steaks were so tough and chewy they were inedible. We got free desserts to make up for it - a cold slab of bought in tart and some kind of supermarket own brand ice cream. Awful. I have given it the benefit of the doubt and this was a return trip - the first being equally as bad. Good atmosphere doesn't make up for this poor quality of food.

Launceston Place

Atmosphere was extremely lacking here. Felt like a library (although this may have been that we were there a bit early, but didn't seem much buzzier by the time we left). Crab risotto was amazing but the rest not particularly inspiring. Even though we were having the set menu it ended up being very expensive for a pretty unmemorbale evening.

St John

Spent literally 6 weeks ruminating on, choosing, planning, booking and un-booking restaurants to take my brother to - he rarely gets a night out in London and is a huge foodie. Money no object and he loves eating strange parts of offal and the like. I eventually plumped for St John - thought is was the perfect choice. What a huge disappointment. The food was bland beyond belief. After 2 courses of such mediocrity we decided not to bother with dessert and instead chose very expensive calvados to try and cheer ourselves up. Left over a hundred pounds out of pocket, fairly hungry and a bit gutted.

Silk Road

Have been on the desperate search for a really interesting, good value ethnic restaurant since moving south of the river from East London. So far it's been pretty disappointing. We really miss Priya in Walthamstow and the amazing Singburi in Leyton - unpretentious places where the food is fantastic. Now we feel we have found the holy grail - Silk Road is amazing. The food is unusual, spicy, flavoursome, huge (beware!) portions, simple setting and incredible value for money with lovely staff. What on earth more could you ask for? We got overexcited looking at the menu and ordered enough for about 6 people - however the waiter Tim boxed up enough left overs for us to eat for the whole weekend. We had a great chat with him about football and he even gave us beer on the house. We had the fried dumplings (so tasty and about 10 cost £3), medium chicken plate (enough for a family of 4 with home made noodles added to the spicy broth later), home style cabbage, hot and sour potato, lamb skewers in cumin and double cooked pork (melt in the mouth). With drinks it came to under £40 for 2 but you could eat very well for a tenner a head. South London is finally home to us!

Iberica (Marylebone)

Our first visit we had mistakenly booked into the restaurant upstairs instead of the buzzy tapas area below. Downstairs was full and the 3 of us had a drink before we decided not to stay and eat as we really wanted the tapas. Despite this being in no way the restaurant's fault, they insisted that our drinks were on the house. What lovely service - it ensured we returned quickly with a reservation to eat in the tapas bar. We weren't disappointed - the food was really tasty and interesting and not too badly priced. Some portions were a really good size but others seemed very small - for example the hot chorizo was tiny. We had lovely spanish wine and a complimentary digestif at the end of the meal - the service was very friendly. Still prefer Salt Yard for a romantic meal but this was certainly worth returning to.

Su-Thai

I really enjoyed the food at this friendly, nicely decorated little restaurant. The red curry was extremely flavoursome and the pad thai was just the right sticky texture again with lots of flavour. Service was friendly and the food well priced. We went early on a week night and we were the only customers and it would have benefitted from a little background music to make it seem a little less lonely. Will go back.

The Wolseley

Go for the atmosphere and the glamour - but not for the food. The place looks amazing but my food was below what I'd expect for a pub meal. Tough steak - supposed to be a rib eye but I doubt it. Anemic undercooked chips (no sauce offered). My friend's pork chop - tiny portion and dried out. Meal for the 3 of us (cocktail, starter, main and bottle of wine) £175. First time we went a few years ago it was much better. Seems like one of those places that doesn't need to worry about the food as the celeb status will keep people coming in.

Ba Shan

Wow. It's not often we come away from a meal and spend the rest of the week talking about / re-living / dreaming about the food. The Szechwan equivalent of dim sum was just delicious. We had something from each page of the dim sum menu plus appetisers and a bowl of noodles to share - that was just the right amount and it meant we got a good selection of their cooking flair. The food was so light and flavoursome (and the presentation just beautiful) it was dreamy. The service was friendly and welcoming and they seemed proud of what they offered us (and I'm not surprised). £60 for 2 with a bottle of wine. Only small improvement would be if they would trust us with a bit more of the spicy heat Szechwan food is famed for. A real experience.

Le Cafe Anglais

I was taken to Cafe Anglais for my birthday and came away with mixed feelings. We had a lovely evening - the setting was wonderful art deco, the staff friendly and some of the food really interesting. But some of it just wasn't that amazing. The starter/appertisers were great (but having read reviews of the food I insisted my bofriend ordered the pike boudin - poor bloke had to eat tepid fishy mousse type stuff - probably is a great dish but not one he relished), the anchovy toast with parmesan custard was really tasty and interesting. The main courses of roast dinners were good but not memorable. My rack of lamb was well flavoured but my boyfriend's suckling pig was a bit bland - perhaps that is just how suckling pig is? I'm not sure. Desserts were ok. But a glamorous evening none the less.

Safa

The food here was fine - nothing memorable but ok, and rather keenly priced. Our waiter was really miserable and unwelcoming though - as new residents we were hoping this could turn into our local indian, with the kind of lovely welcome and service that we had in the fantastic Priya in Walthamstow. We'll give it another try but we were a bit disappointed.

Khan's (Brixton)

We have just moved to Brixton and have been searching desperately for a good indian restaurant. I really hoped Khan's would be as good as the reviews on here suggested - and I'm so glad to report that it didn't disappoint. The waiting staff were welcoming, super friendly and obviously very proud of their food. With good reason. We had an excellent fish starter - it was in a light batter that was flavoursome and spiced with cumin and fennel and served on a lovely smoked aubergine dip. For main course I had a very spicy lamb dish from the 'smoky oven' served on a sizzling platter with onions and peppers. The menu explained that the dish had north african origins. It was delicious - tender lamb packed with a spicy and smoked flavour. The BYO policy is great too and it even looks quite nice inside! We will be back - and soon.

Mien Tay

I love many of the Vietnamese restaurants around here - Song Que, Viet Grill, Cay Tre etc. but this is such a great unassuming place - extremely cheap (the only one out of those listed above where you can bring your own booze meaning you can have a decent bottle of wine and keep the costs right down) and the food is seriously good. The spring rolls with fabulous dipping sauce are like nothing I've had before - light but gooey and crunchy all at once and the quail served with lime and salt was extremely tasty. In fact we just ordered starters all over again - main courses always tend to disappoint me in Vietnamense restaurants if you're not into the pho noodle soup stuff which I'm not. This is so firendly, cheap and tasty I just hope I soon don't have to queue up outside like Song Que.

I haven't been back to medcalf, after initially having a fantastic sunday lunch there I booked for our staff Xmas lunch and it was disappointing (no roast potoatoes?! I know maybe I am being overly traditional but still...). Went back last week and we had a really tasty, reasonably priced meal. Had skirt of beef which was cooked to perfection - and a huge portion too, really pink in the middle., with a great bottle of wine. They didn't bat an eyelid when we asked for welsh rarebit as a side order to our beef (in great contrast to Great Queen Street where they look appalled if you want to try something they decide doesn't go together). Good atmosphere and a really quirky looking place.

Great Queen Street

I have been to this restaurant a number of times since it opened and introduced many firends to it, but after my most revcent trip I won't be going back. We got a slot (had to have the table back by 8.15 as usual) and I ordered sea bass to share with my friend and my other friend ordered the wood pigeon. I asked if I could order an accompaniment of chips to go with the bass - it came with nothing (even at £32) and I saw chips on the menu to go with other food. Unfortunately I was told this was not possible as the chips were hand cut ONLY to go with the steak (?). The fish arrived and I divided it between our plates but it was not cooked and smelled not too good either. We sent it back and it then re-appeared 15 minutes later cobbled back together again but this time not raw. We had gone off the whole idea at this point and our other frend had eaten her (nearly raw) wood pigeon on her own while we waited. We made the best of things and ate a some part of the fish then left the rest. I was so surprised when the bill came that they had made no gesture at all for the fact we had to send our food back even though we had said that we hadn't enjoyed it. They said they wouldn't take the fish off the bill 'because we'd eaten it'. Eventually they said they would compromise and take desserts off - but only becuase we made a point of it. It ruined the meal - if they had made a gesture without having to be challenged we would have written it off as a mistake and returned. Then to be asked for our table back sharply when we had been delayed by the fact our food wasn't cooked just topped it all off.

Ignore the 1970s British standards such as prawn cocktail and steak diane and go for the excellent greek staples such as the cheeses, olives, pitta, grilled meats and salads. We ate here the other evening when passing and we very luckily managed to get a table. I was really impressed with the food, wine and atmosphere. We'd love to eat here more often but they always seem to be fully booked. The portions are much more generous than other tapas restaurants I've been to and are really tasty. The only thing that could have been better was the tortilla - it was very well done and didn't have the gooey texture that you get in places like the Salt Yard. The popularity of the place goes to show that Walthamstow has a strong market for really good quality restaurants!

Mela

I love the food at this restaurant (particularly the melt in the mouth grilled meats) - but I don't go often because you can never be sure what kind of service you'll get. My partner point blank refuses to return after we had rude and slow service one time. So I went with a friend the other night - with a free glass of wine offer from TimeOut that I had booked that day. Horribly predictably they made a fuss and said no such offer existed, and then it did exist but it had expired etc. etc. Eventually we got our wine but it took the shine off the whole experince - although the food was great. Hawksmoor Spitalfields

Returned to Hawksmoor. Surely their steak must be top notch at nearly £20 before you pay for side dishes? My rib eye I asked for medium. It came nicely cooked around the edges but raw in the centre. One third was gristle. I complained but was told it was cooked as I requested. On insisting, they took it back to the kitchen and cooked it until it resembled leather and returned it. Galling at the price. Won't be back.
