Cubana

Great food - interesting menu and good options, everything from small dishes to big meals. But terrible service and filthy floors! Am not normally bothered by a bit of muck, but this place is always really filthy, which is worrying!

You have to book or you can never get a table, but they often write names down wrong or not at all, which can be stressful.

Several times the drinks have failed to arrive for up to half an hour, and food can also be slow to arrive.

Don't go if you have to be somewhere on time afterwards or have anger management / hyper-cleanliness issues! But if you're relaxed you might like it.

Busaba Eathai (Wardour St)

Eat here regularly - good food, good value, service is efficient. There are large, shared tables, so no privacy. Is good fun eavesdropping on others' conversations - several times have been next to women talking intently about their diets while munching papaya salads, so the place obviously appeals to them for some reason! But the less healthy options (deep-fried calamari, curries, coconut rice) are best!

Tandoori Nights

Best restaurant in East Dulwich. Great curries - big selection, lots of healthy options. Lovely tandoori chicken, sizzling grills etc. as well as range of curries.

Good prices and great service. It's small, so you need to book on weekend nights.

Atmosphere calm and peaceful - not a place for a rowdy curry in a big group, ideal for a romantic meal or meal with a friend.

Le Chardon (East Dulwich)

Have eaten here many times - the food has always been very good. It is around £70 for a 2-course meal for two with one bottle of wine. Basically standard French meat / fish options with choice of side-orders.

Atmosphere is weird - dark and like being in a bathroom because it's tiled. Not romantic, but when it's busy it's quite nice.

Service is fine - not friendly, but efficient, I prefer slightly off-hand service to over-attentive hassling!

Franklins

Eaten here a couple of times in 2007. Limited menu, everything is stodgy, fat-laden and meaty (when I was there the only veggie option was glamorgan sausages which were basically solid cheese). Tasty desserts. Good cooking, but expensive for what it is.

Service a bit scatty but friendly and atmosphere good - nice bare-brick pub with big windows.

Woodlands (Marylebone)

Have been to the same chain in Piccadilly and enjoyed it, but ate here in March 2007 and it was terrible.

The food was bland, over-priced (almost £5 for ordinary pilau rice and breads) and runny. The worst was a vegetable curry which consisted of nothing but lots of bland, luke-warm sauce, a few tiny bits of cauliflower and what looked like tinned carrots and green beans.

The staff kept pressuring us to order more (suggesting a bigger beer, more starters, sides, dessert, coffee etc.) - some element of this is normal in London, but it was too much.

The bill for one small starter, two veggie curries, one rice, two breads and two small beers came to over £40 excluding service, which was not good value.

It was really quiet and I'm not surprised!
