Chez Bruce

This was a birthday surprise so I didn't have time to muster up any pre-conceptions. That said I'm not without standards and even up against my fairly staunch views, I can scarcely fault the evening.

After a well advised couple of aperitifs from the sommelier my boyfriend and I enjoyed the mackrel with chorizo and hare and spatzle to start. Both we're delicious and although I'm a little sceptical of new fangled taste sensations both combations of fairly unusual ingredients were extremely tasty.

For the main we enjoyed Duck and lamb washed down with an interesting Spanish red - another good recommendation from the sommelier. Then to top things off well advised pudding wines allowed us to make the most of the desserts.

If I had to be ultra critical the only area it fell down for me was the bread - it was completely unremarkable and verging on stale. Perhaps it's a clever tactic to manage expectations and ensure you don't stuff your face with carb before tucking into the delicacies they serve up. I found the 2.30hour allotment was sufficient and didn't feel hurried or harrassed - the service was impeccable.

My big recommendation would be to really make the most of the sommelier who elevates a great meal into a truely exceptional one.

The wines we drank bumped up the price but the three course set price is still a good deal given the food your eating and service your enjoying.

Mews of Mayfair

I actually visited Mews a while back but was talking last night to a friend about taster menus and it conjurred up rather great memories.

The decor was understated - I'm always a fan of white table cloths and nice crockery. Liked the atmosphere although there were 5 of us that evening - all of whom were great company so that may be skewing it,

I wouldn't describe it as great value but the food was super - i think with Taster menus that what you really get a carefully planned extravangaza for your palatte. It didn't disappoint.

So if you don't mind the financial hit - I'd recommend it.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Fulham)

You can't really fault this chain. The burgers are delicious, the choice is excellent and the service punctual. I'd say I've got a healthy appetite even for a girl and their burgers and chips more than satisfy.

They've also added salads so not everyone has to be a burger eater - great stuff.
