Gaucho (Tower Bridge)

Visited here on Tuesday for another excellent steak. We were in a group of four and the restaurant was busy (downstairs if not upstairs with the techno music).

Service was friendly and speedy, though the wine reccomendation was not quite what we were looking for.

My rib eye was delicious, and all the members of the party enjoyed their steaks, though one was returned as overcooked with minimal fuss.

Dessert (dulce de leche cheesecake) was not really as good as it could have been but still good.

So a really good meal, and I was happy to pay the somewhat extravagant prices for the quality of the beef and the preparation.

The only downside was that they lost my coat and made me miss my train.....not a great end to the evening.

Andrew Edmunds

Visited Andrew Edmunds last weekend in a group of six, and having been before I knew what to expect in terms of cosiness.....

As a larger group of six on a separate round table this wasn't a problem, but my impression was of a very friendly and homely atmosphere.

After a very pleasant aperitif (a surprisingly enjoyable apple cider brandy) I had a black pudding salad (light, crisp and tasty) followed by a mutton stew. Certainly not my usual ordering style but the stew was cooked perfectly, a wonderfully meaty dish with a generous helping of tender mutton pieces and an accompaniment of well-picked vegetables.

My poor memory has allowed me to forget the excellent red wine we drank but there was a very pleasant (and zesty) Marlborough sauvignon blanc.

My pudding was a good sticky toffee pudding to finish off (though tasting the plum and almond tart I should have possibly gone for that...)

Overall a most enjoyable evening, good food, helpful yet not intrusive service and a really inviting atmosphere. What more could I ask for?

China Boulevard on the River

Visited here last night in a group of nine. We hired a room( and were also there for a little Christmas Karaoke....)

There were a number of problems. Firstly the service was very slow, this can be excused when a restaurant is busy, but seeing as the ground floor was actually empty and there were maybe 8 full tables upstairs this was very poor.

When some mixed starters arrived, there were two (not large) plates amongst nine, one of which was mainly seaweed and cost £25.....

The duck course failed to arrive completely and two of the main courses also did not show up.

The quality of the food cannot be questioned though, it was really excellent, it just arrived late and incomplete (I should also point out that the quality should be good as the average main meal costs over £10, quite a bit higher than many competitors).

The bill was adjusted and the manager was then very helpful, but it was a slightly bewildering experience (I am afraid I cannot recomend the Karaoke either as the system took an hour to get working and the song choice was very limited).

I don't think I would go back, but if you can get the food to your table, it is very good, just don't expect excellent service, and don't sit in a private room.
